I would need a reason beyond "Why not?" in order to give out very sensitive information. I could think of numerous reasons why not, which leads me to ask: why?

Why not share? because if it were within a system of "ill show you mine location if you show me yours" it would give people something to look forward to and work hard to maintain their reputation for knowing cool ass places. thats why.

Who would be a competent authority to determine who can be trusted with access to the ultimate travel guide and who still needs to post more photos of chairs and peeling paint? Many people (including me) would only trust such information to people they have know, so they're not going to outsource their judgment to a third party. The friends of my friends are not always my friends...

In our local urban exploration scene, I'm seeing a growing reluctance for sharing information online about high-profile locations even among long-time explorers that are known to be trustworthy. I think it's a move against the modern Internet where everyone shares everything all the time.

Also, I don't really buy that "I'm too old..." crap. I say that all the time for a number of things, but in reality there are only a few things I'm definitely too old for...

Well i have a family now and its not exactly safe to bring little ones around with you to go exploring in certain places where anything can happen. so YEAH, it can make a person feel like their too old for alot of this kinda shit now especially when theres not enough hours in the day or the week for something you USED to have time for and loved doing.

And obviously if we were sharing locations of lets say houses to check out, there would be an expiration date on how long it would be available anyway because of forces that are outside anyones control because obviously sooner or later the place would get bought. no one should be expecting a location to be there forever for anyone to wonder into. That comes with the territory of this type of system, but i personally dont have a problem with that and ill be one of the few that can proudly say "ive been inside that multi million dollar house before" I started out my UE by checking out empty and half built houses anyway, and it was still great fun.

I think you had an interesting idea, really difficult to safely implement but neat none the less.

I would normally say it's a decent idea, but there's just no trust within the community as a whole. I went out exploring this weekend with someone who I've known online for a long time and who is a 10 year veteran of UE. I come to find out that he's stolen a bunch of artifacts from incredible locations, throws chairs out of windows so people can't copy his photos, and kicks in windows to gain access to buildings. I know that these things aren't terribly uncommon, but I was pretty shocked to see the mentality of this person who I had respected for being a great photographer and explorer.

I hate that I have to keep some locations under wraps, but I really don't have a choice if I want them to stay in good shape.

Everything you described is done through private messages. I have asked for help through messaging, and people have asked me as well. I don't understand what you're trying to accomplish here. There is a trust system, you just aren't a part of it because nobody knows who you are. Get out there, post some photos, and once people know you can be discreet you will get replies to your questions. But part of the fun is just screwing around and finding your own ways into places. Then, as it seems, you can hold them over peoples heads and give them incentive to help you.

There was a similar idea once in an Spanish forum, maybe they just copied it from this forum, because the rules were almost the same. It didn't work. Full members encouraged non-members to share the locations with them, so they could visit places all around the country without spending a minute looking for them. Obviously, that worked for a while. Non-members got tired of giving locations away and not receiving ANYTHING but thanks, so the system broke up.

Here it doesn't work the same way ,thankfully. I mean, nobody asked me for the locations I've posted, but still I don't like the idea of having a map with, let's say, 10.000 locations with full access to a hundred people. Even if they all met in person, you can never know what that person does while being alone. In that Spanish forum there was a person who was trusted by everyone, until someone proved that he did graffiti in some locations.

So I think UE has to be something between you and your closer friends, and that's it. When a location gets famous it always ends the same way, and you all know that. That's why I don't usually share locations with anybody who is not my friend, and obviously I don't ask for them if it's not to a friend.

It's a real shame it has to be that way, but you can't trust people you don't know at all, even if they are trusted by someone you already trust.

Using private messages? D'oh, why didn't I ever think of that?!

There is seriously no need to say anything more. If you want to share information, you don't need it coded into this site.

That's how I do it, but I also have an eye toward recruiting new explorers into the inner circle at all times.

I'm not trying to be a smart a$$, but you could always start your own UE forum. Now days websites are inexpensive and almost all of them offer free forum software with the plan. It wouldn't be intended to replace UER, but rather provide a private messaging site where you could choose to invite people you trust to share locations with. Even if someone gets approved and then turns out to be an idiot, you have the ability to shut down their account.

One benefit of UER is the global presence, but a small private group might provide the open information exchange you are looking for.

Just my thoughts...
