Gargantua

Greetings UER! My Name is Rick, and I hail from Oshawa Ontario. This is my first post on this site, and definitely not my last. I have been obsessed with exploring specifically storm drains, and plan on attending as many UER meetings as possible(sadly I work full time, and am going in to school soon). But I digress. The real purpose of my post is the great Gargantua, located in Toronto.

A friend who I frequent storm drains with has proposed that we are ready to explore this beast of a drain, and I just wanted to check with a third party on the preparations we should take. I have read the description of Gargantua on UER, and it was quite useful, suggesting Breathing masks among the less common.

I would like to hear from anyone who has actually visited the drain, to know if there is anything about the drain I should know, i.e. danger, other specific equipment, clothing, or anything else.

I would also be quite willing to meet up with ANYONE who would like to tag along! always looking for someone else who appreciates the art.

Any other info/picture requested of me, like previous expeditions I've been on, feel free to ask! looking forward to all of your feedback.

Before you get tackled let me help you out. Start in the rookie section and do some reading. Even if you have been exploring for 40 years start in the rookie section and then make your way over to the rest of the board.

Other than that welcome aboard.

And follow the board rules. It will help ya out in the long run.

unless you have an extreme sensitivity to mold there's not likely the need to wear a mask or respirator in a large storm drain like Gargantua. It's not a sanitary sewer and has numerous open vent shafts, making it exceptionally well ventilated. The primary concern in Gargantua is the risk of flash flooding - a danger that exists throughout the year, but is all the more prominent in the spring and early summer. I've been down there days after a rainstorm and could see the high-water marks well over my head. Getting caught down there in a rainstorm would be incredibly dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. That applies to any drain or tunnel, big or small. When it rains, no drains.

Of course, that is the rule of thumb for drains, I would never attempt storm drains during the rain! Thank you for the heads up though.
