I feel its not the vehicle that makes you look legit. Its the way you dress. Space Invader (a famous graffiti artist) was able to close off a busy street in London by putting temporary fences in front of the street and getting him and his friends to wear construction hats and reflective vests. Dress right and no one will question you.

I think they'll be even more suspicious if you step out of, say, a bright green Camaro while wearing a hard hat and safety vest, unless there are other people in other vehicles doing the same. Dressing officially is important, but some cars have to stay two blocks away while others can just be left right on the sidewalk out front.

This is better.
You can get one for $1500-$3000.

The CrownVic seems like a good choice, but people will notice it and wonder whats going on - especially when it's been sitting for hours. A white Ford Ranger with toolbox seems completely inconspicuous, maybe even one of those wood/ladder racks.

This past weekend, we had just finished exploring a beautiful church, and we were all sitting around where the altar would have been, finishing up our beers.
A guy walks in with a few younger dudes and starts bragging about all the items he stole from the church throughout the years. What a prick.
That aside, he had apparently parked right out front, with his big grayish-white truck.. Well, then in come two of Detroit's finest and kick our butts out. Luckily, no one got in trouble. Well, i almost did, but that's another story.
Moral of the story, the police would've never stopped, if they hadn't seen the dude's truck parked right outside. So, i can see this working in some situations, but from first hand experience, it is also a great way to get busted.

It almost seems that the more you try to melt into the background... the more you get noticed..

What about going the other way?

I drive a sport bike & a Gold(ish) Toyota Tacoma 2wd pickup..

What about magnetic signs on the doors like 'Smith & Co Asbestos Abatement' orange safety vest, orange hard hat, clip board, Camera, etc.. etc.. ?

I outfit my trucks to look oilfield/survey trucks, it's pretty easy to stay under the radar here in Alberta as long as the truck isn't lifted or anything.

I don't quite understand the people that want to drive right up to an abandonment. Walking to where you're going is just part of the adventure to me. Just park your car somewhere inconspicuous nearby and walk.

Sometimes that's not an option unless you're prepared to walk a mile or more, carrying supplies and looking suspicious. I realize that's not out of the question, but it sure is easier to park closer.

I've parked inside a location a couple times. That works rather well. Your results may vary.

I've got a 1996 Crown Vic that was an old trooper car and a 2002 white Ford Ranger. Had good luck being left alone with both. My husband was speeding in the Vic wearing a suit and tie and dark glasses and cops just waved at him as he flew past. SC got rid of most of the Vics years ago so that one is getting harder to use. The plain white Ranger never seems to go out of style.

My '89 beat-up Jeep Cherokee, a favorite among construction guys around here for their $500-ness, allowed me to pull up to just about any place, get out with beat up jeans and a white tee, and walk up, no questions asked. It always had construction tools inside, which also lead to the credibility prop. One time, I even had a cop come up to me and ask when the owner (helps to at least know the name of the owner) was going to get me to finally board the place up.

PM me if you want to get join our board and get fit!

Lie rather still because this is the first time I've used this equipment.

The problem is that as a 5'4" blonde girl, I can't pull any of this off, no matter how legit the car looks.

This. Except 5'0" and hair color TBD. Personally, I prefer the park and walk strategy.
