I know I'm not that great yet, but i tend to catch onto things very quickly, and its only a matter of time that people of fuckin facebunk, or somewhere else start trying to take my photos. Like I said I am not the greatest, but I hope I can pick up some tips from some of the better photographers in here. I finally get to start college classes in fall, getting out of the oilpatch.

So I was thinking of making my cal sign that i use on my phots down in the corners like a pro photographer. And so far the name I have come up with is
"Psykotik Prints." Psykotik used to be my old call sign back when into hacking and trying to learn writign code. Years ago...lol i was 15 the first time programmed my own game on the internet. KInda burnt myself out. Anyhow I am thinking of Going with the name "Psykotik Prints"

Does that seem like a pretty good name for my stuff now. Then once in finsih my classes, one that I'm shoting for is photojournalism, and i am also gonna study photography. To actually confidently photograph certain jobs, or wedding, or anyhting.

So how does the Psykotik Prints sound to y'all? Does it got a ring to it? I hope so

It's actually called a watermark on your images.

And don't think that because you put one on there, people won't take your images and crop it off. I've had platinum selling artists steal my images, crop my watermark and post them on their social media sites. Thank god I have a decent lawyer.

The few personal tips I can give you is don't make it too obvious. If the watermark is big and bold, it will take away from the visuals of the image. Something simple and low key is best. Again, that's my opinion, some people love to plaster a big red logo on a black and white image.

Sounds a little arrogant to me to say 'I'm going to be awesome at this and people are going to steal my stuff'. I think if you expect to be received as a serious professional that would be a silly name. It definitely sounds like something a 25 year old came up with. Lots of professionals just use their actual names, maybe consider that.

I'm pretty firmly in the "no watermark" camp. It's very easy to either crop or edit out a watermark from a photo, and it generally is distracting and detracts from the image itself. In my opinion, it's better to not use a watermark and file a DMCA takedown request if you find someone using your photo without permission.

You're on a site with literally over a million images. What makes you think you're so awesome? Not that you aren't but let's get real. With the vast majority of members taking photos with thousands of dollars worth of equipment and hundreds of hours of experience using it all, the chance your photo will be stolen for monetary gains is pretty slim.

"Will you compromise and then realize the price is too much to pay?" "Winners and losers... which one will you be today?"

Watermarks are retarded (except when cleverly hidden in the image itself) but if you do it, I think you should stick with iHumpNuns.

Maybe with a nice stylized logo of a screaming nun in the background.

(But then you'll have to worry about people stealing your watermark and cropping out the rest of the photo. Except me. It was my idea, so I should get, like, $1 every time you use it. It's only fair.)

If I saw a decent photo with "Psykotik Prints" watermarked into it, I'd think this person in a douche! And lets say, for example, one day you do get good enough that people steal your shit, by then you'll probably be grown up and embarrassed by the name you are now known by.

Don't bother with a watermark.

If a person's going to steal your photo, they were never going to pay for it in the first place.

If you don't want your photos "jackd", don't post them online.
Problem solved.
I see so many idiotic watermarks, that anything with a ridiculous watermark on it, I don't even give it a second glance and just scroll by them now.
Subtle, fine, but some of these fools think they got something more valuable than the fucking Mona Lisa, (yea I know it's a painting, not a photo, so what )

Fuck watermarks would be the gist of my rant.

And your name for your watermark is equally as stupid as my name on this forum.

If you want an example of good watermarking, look for threads by WEKurtz. He blends them into the photo so you don't notice it. But unfortunately, photo stealing is the way of the web. I have found photos of mine on reddit and tumblr posted by other people. I don't care too much though, It's not like I'm selling them.

I have been on the 'I hate watermarks' side for a long time, but started to see the value of it. No, it doesn't look very good, and yes, people will still steal your pictures.

I'm not afraid that people will steal my pictures for profit. A lot of people seem to think that watermarks are high-horsery. But look at it this way:

Most people will simply republish pictures online. They are too lazy to cite the source (or the source is lost after several republishes), but also they probably won't bother to crop your watermark out. When your watermark contains your website address/full name/alias, people will check out the rest of your work. The thief gives you free advertising!

But íf someone is retarded enough to crop out your watermark before republishing, he will have to crop so much off your picture that it probably doesn't look very good anymore. Of course anyone with Photoshop skills could just clone it out instead, but that's the worst case scenario.

So yeah, I see it as embedding the source into the picture so people can easily find me and the rest of my work.

Oh, and I wouldn't go for Psykotik Prints. Sounds a bit edgy

I debated watermarking my photos, but then i remembered i'm not a very good photographer to begin with. If someone wants to steal my photos, i take it as a compliment. There are much better photos out there to steal. So, if you really want to steal mine, have at it.

Stuff uploaded to Flickr = usually no watermark because in the event the work is stolen and it bothers me (someone's using it for-profit or whatnot) I have something that shows it is copyrighted work, and an exif date + date of upload to reference to when I have to call it out.

Stuff uploaded to Facebook or other websites/forums (before Flickr) = hidden watermark embedded in a "busy" area of the photo... don't trust Facebook for a second.
