Hello everyone. I'm currently working on a software package that'll allow people to create their own personal location databases, it's based on google maps and a custom node.js/mongodb backend. I plan to release it as open source soon as well.

I decided to create this thread so I can get some feedback/ideas/questions/whatever. For now here's some screenshots of it.

1. Home screen

2. Entry view

3. Location entry page

The import feature on the location entry page allows you to import .kml files, such as the ones you can export from Google Maps/Earth.

That's a good idea. I've tried a few apps for this purpose, but never settled on one.

For those who are interested I've put the project on github. You can find it here: http://ablakely.github.io/uedb/.

I am willing to provide hosting for people who are interested, you may PM me for more information on that. So far this project is on tested on Linux and Mac OS X, if there are any Windows developers who are familiar with node.js and mongodb feel free to test it out and contribute.

Can you use custom map markers on it? I like doing that with Google Maps so I can see by looking at the markers what kind of location it is.

You can use google earth for this purpose; if you want to share, you can upload the data to a google map, and set the privacy level to what you need.

If you want to protect the locations you love to explore, don't talk about them online in public!
If you want to make exploring friends, send people private messages! Meet up in real life! Get off the internet!
Don't try to have a UER e-penis! You won't impress anyone! This especially means you, Minneapolis MN newbies!

does this mean it might work on apple maps so the whole "3D" function will add to the experience?

I'm aware, but some people may want a different option. This is also a solution that allow multiple people to access/contribute to/maintain a db, for say like a group of explorers who often go exploring together.

Um. No. Google maps only, apple maps doesn't provide a web based solution.

It's been a while since I've gotten to play with this project, but for those who are interested, I setup a live example of uedb.

You can access it here:

There is currently no way of deleting an entry, so be careful with what you decide to add.

Hey, I checked out your DB and I really like the idea!

I use Google maps, but have several hundred locations mapped. It makes it difficult to search because of the multiple pages. I've noticed there also aren't any good KML readers to convert Google maps into an offline readable map.

Google Maps has this functionality with My Maps.

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/u/0/

Sadly enough, it sucks for offline usage if you need to navigate as this functionality doesn't exist, but you can save specific areas for offline usage.

Hi everyone,

It's been awhile since I posted anything on this project so I figured I'd give some info on what I've been working on.

I've been working on the functionality for multiple accounts, as opposed to the single user basic HTTP authentication I had originally implemented. As well as redesigning the user interface, progress has been slow but it's starting to come together.

As for Windows users, I plan to make this new codebase windows compatible as well as easier to install and configure. I'm also hoping to implement some kind of basic functionality offline mode, for people who take their laptops on the road with them.

That's it for now.
