The walls of the abandoned Nevada City hospital have seen grief and tragedy unfold over the past 152 years.

Serving as a morgue, poor house, general hospital, housing for low-risk inmates, welfare office, and finally as the Behavioral Health clinic with out-patient offices; the site became famous for its 2001 shooting when a mental health out-patient suffering delusions opened fire in the facility, killing two employees. Despite the killing spree the hospital remained open until 2006, when the county moved their offices to a new location.

The murders prompted “Laura's Law”, a California law allowing court-ordered out-patient treatment for the mentally ill showing signs of potential violence. It was named after Laura Wilcox, a 19 year-old receptionist killed in the massacre.

The building remains standing and future development of the land is uncertain. The windows and doors are boarded up tight as though to prevent a horrid secret from escaping. To this day, you can still find two graves on the site, a large parking lot, a cemetery directly behind it and courtyards with fountains that no longer spray water and machinery standing around as though waiting to be fixed up.

Thanks! Go for it. Sadly we were pressed on time and couldn't find a way in with our quick search, the only place we could find was out of reach but if you find a way in you should let me know. It's a really great find with unique history.

I didn't know there were graves on site!
Our friend Vexx took us here a few years ago. Supposedly the murder took place at the bottom of the ramp right near the front entry.
Kinda creepy standing in that area.
Nice to see daytime shots!
Good job Flashy

Yikes! Lucky for us everyone didn't seem to care. The parking lot used to have a fence but now anyone can go in. And there aren't any "no trespassing" signs except on the doors leading in but those are missing the handles.

We didn't either until we stumbled upon them and wondered if there were any more. It was freaky!

*whistles* That IS creepy! We hung around that trying to get our bearings, it's eerie to think we stood where a murder occurred.

Thanks for the support! It means a lot. I just wish I could have gotten some inside photos, we were pressed on time and couldn't find a way in but we hope to come back.

i wish we had seen this before the "modify post" date had expired, because i think maybe one of us could have helped. i want you to know that there are places that respected explorers have waited up to 3 years to post after documenting(not a reference to how long it takes me to post everything), please consider this. one of many possible reasons is that they themselves seek to explore & understand its value before exposing it to the public or in some cases even the UE community.

when one posts a place, especially in a public post, it shows up on web searches like google where the unselfinitiated, scrappers, couch surfers, arsonists, any anyone can find it. all of the above will go through what ever they have to in order to find said location, depending on their own devotion to their activity of choice. the more one explores & sees how places progress after exposure the more one starts to consider the life of an abandonment.

i guess i just wanna say that there are threads you can't see, as you are not a full member, but everything basic members post here can be seen by the public(unless that has changed, we try to make some things private if are at all worries about the attention it will bring them). so there are established locations you are not aware of that full members have threads about & may already be in FM DB. this is not one of those, this site already has a public thread.

i know your introduction to this community has been hard but i would ask that you consider whether or not your post will risk a location. making a POE is not dissimilar to making a detailed public post about an abandoned location.
maybe think of it like this: "you didn't get in, why send more heat to a place you want to be inside before anyone you know?"
i'm not saying tell no one, but why tell an entire public forum? find locals, do research, send PMs to members that live nearby. find a person that knows about it, maybe look on this site for it:

http://www.uer.ca/...urrpage=1&pp#post0

..or find out yourself before exposing it. please know this isn't the position of this entire network. in fact, it may only be admitted to by a few explorers but in my experience every explorer finds a place, or a few, that they will only talk about to people that either:
a) someone that they know & respect, be it personally or due to their own online persona/exploits
or
b) someone that also found it themselves

here is an interesting take on all this:

all that said, nice find. sorry we didn't see this in time to ask you to edit out the details that reveal it entirely. happy hunting.

Not that I don't agree with you about using caution when posting locations, but this spot isn't exactly a well kept secret. It's been posted all over the place, including popular websites like Atlas Obscura..

Woah, woah woah, okay I see where you're coming from but I didn't make a POE nor am I advertising something that isn't a well kept secret. This place is in a neighborhood and like others have said, it's all over flickr and another site WITH an address. I didn't think I posted this publicly but if I did, sorry, I just don't see this being that big of a deal. Even my friend who lives 40 minutes away knew of the place and it seems like a spot I'd be shocked a lot of explorers didn't know about. If it were super secret, I'd rethink posting what I posted. I agree with what you're saying, I just don't think this was that big of a deal.

Thanks for the caution, though. I'll keep that in mind.

well guys i had no idea it was so famous, it wasn't locked up nearly as tight as this when we went. in fact it was pretty wide open...
..i wonder if the massive amount of online outing had anything to do with the tightening of security? looks like it may have been posted on March 29th of this year to Obscura(thats when the likes & comments start on it), we went back in 2011. call me crazy but this only reinforces my position.

i wasn't implying you made a POE in this location i was comparing making a POE(as you proudly stated you had done in a previous post) to causually posting everything one needs to find a place you haven't gotten into yet. i am suggesting that for the sake of you getting in before you bring it to the attention of people that don't know about a place, maybe you should complete your goal, for your own sake. i am suggesting that maybe you should see the inside of a place personally before you decide if its a "big deal" or not. i mean how would you even know how special a place is without exploring it?

anyway i'm not surprised that these two share your opinion about this, maybe just go with what they say. they likely know best anyway & haven't really had altercations or problems with this exact issue in the past...
..what do i know?
best of luck to you on your adventures!

You know, there's this thing called "letting it go" when it comes to stuff in the past. You don't need to act like a jerk just because I wanted to show a place I was excited to visit. And have you thought that maybe the place was boarded up because it was dangerous? Most places I find are boarded up because it prevents people from getting hurt if they decide to do something stupid. Just because a place is left open doesn't mean it will for long or because it has had many visitors. Bringing up something everyone got over is a real dick move. Move on.

I plan on going back, the original visit was to see a friend 40 minutes away and we decided to check it out. I thought the history was fascinating and I knew the inside must have a lot of stories to tell. I'm simply sharing my excitement about a beautiful place that I WANT and HOPE to explore the next time I'm in the area a bit further. That shouldn't dampen finding the place, any building is worth exploring and sharing, even if one cannot find a way in. I understand some places are better off being secrets, but you have to judge if the person has strong enough judgment to realize that. Yes, I made mistakes, but I'm not making them (or at least not trying to) anymore.

Thanks, and there's no reason to say who is and who isn't right. Insight is insight, it helps grow the community. If you ever have a problem like this and want to talk to me personally, just shoot me a message and I'll be happy to either edit it or whatever to better contribute to the community. I'm just trying to spread the love and excitement of the hobby.

this is my point exactly. what i am saying is i hope you reach a point when your interest in actually exploring & preserving locations exceeds your "want and hope" to share a bunch of information about finding a place you haven't even gotten into. you proclaim it to be not a big deal but have no real idea what is inside.

did you happen to read the link to the conceptual ethics thread? what are your thoughts on such? do you understand what they are talking about? do you see value in there ideas? i wonder if cdr or rescued have even been inside.

like i said, if what you have displayed as your style of exploring is what you are looking for & satisfied with.. more power to you & good luck with your adventures.

you didn't really address my stance on not revealing a place you have yet to get inside of, but you mention that i can PM you about future issues. i would put to you the same option. why post a public thread when you could PM some people about it? why not PM me about my reply? no you replied here for a reason & posted this to the thread for one too. we all have reasons for doing things publicly. it is that very compulsion i am trying to bring into question. so ya maybe we both need to consider letting things go, i would suggest you start with endangering locations, especially ones you haven't had a chance to explore. i suggest such for two reasons that i will list here again:
1) to preserve the location. so what if there are a lot of people that have posted about it. two wrongs do not a right make.
2) piquing peoples' interest in a place before you are satisfied with your exploration of it can likely limit your access to said location.

anyhow kudos on your find. good luck on your exploits.

I have done nothing wrong and I wish you would stop acting like I have. Everyone who posts in the forums has the same problem with people wanting to check out the location, why am I the one getting lectured? I do know something great is inside and it's the stories I researched. I know if I did get in, it would be beautiful no matter what. Just because I didn't this time doesn't mean I wouldn't try next time if I weren't pressed on time. I just wanted to share. And do NOt hold anything I did against me, we all are learning and this is nothing to make a huge deal about. Like I said, real dick move to bring up something that everyone has moved on from. Move. On.

I took nothing but pictures and left nothing but footprints. I have the same faith with people who love the hobby will do the same and if not, that's not my problem. I am doing what I can to preserve these places but with it being in the wide open, anything can happen with or without the help of this site. I don't see how finding a way in is going to not endanger anything anymore than posting pictures from the outside is.

Just leave the thread if you're not happy and let this be. Everyone else doesn't have a problem, let us just enjoy what I've found and let me be proud that I could even hike around this place, take pictures, and read up on the history. Maybe you're not satisfied with that, but I am and there's nothing wrong with that. Not a pebble is out of place and any damage done is not my fault. So lay off.

Please and thank you.

LMFAO! done & done, best of luck to you!

i am the other yourself.

"Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices? I've heard them calling my name. Is this the sweet sound that called the young sailors. The voice might be one and the same. I've heard it too many times to ignore it. It's something that I'm supposed to be." http://www.flickr....orers/collections/
