Ohio State Reformatory

The Ohio State Reformatory, also referred to as the Mansfield Reformatory, is a historic prison located in Mansfield, Ohio. Constructed between 1886 and 1896, it remained in operation until a 1990 federal court order required it to be closed. The facility is best known for its role in The Shawshank Redemption.



On July 30, 2012, Abandoned hosted a photography event at the Reformatory, which allowed for early entry into the former prison.

These are great!!

Amazing location and pics. Do you know if they are going to let it go or try to restore it? I should've gone to the 20th anniversary of Shawshank .

It's been stabilized and restoration is slowly ongoing. Some rooms will be kept as-is, like where Brooks hanged himself in the movie. In some of the photos on the site, you can see scaffolding.

I went here last year.
It was an incredible place to see. Was also great to be left alone to wander the place at your own leisure......
..though we were not allowed tripods....no biggie.

I recognized almost all the spots in your shots except for like two.

This is one of my most wanted to visit locations. Dying to spend a day exploring its cracks and crevasses...and then spend the night exploring too...but that's just me. Lovely shots of a wonderful location.

We/Abandoned has tentative dates of May 10 and August 16 for early morning photography events with a discounted rate. The prison does not open for general admission until 11 AM, so that's three hours to scour the place. I'll post details when it's available.

It's locked up tight, and open for tours and ghost hunts. So it's abandoned as a prison, but active an an historical location. I'm taking my scout troop there in June as part of the urbex merit badge.

I know, I was just joking around due to the militant attitude from some of the members here.
