Apparently Scott Brothers Entertainment (of "Brother v/s Brother" and "Property Brothers" fame) is holding an open casting call for a "docu-reality show" about urbexing. I'm of the opinion that this is going to be a fucking disaster, but I'm curious what other people think.

It could end badly, but they could also do it in a way that keeps locations secret or going to well-known places. But nothing ever really works out that way.

I like their HGTV shows a lot, they are done well, not overly dramatic, and actually kind of wholesome. With the badasses on here the show will probably fail, but they have the resources to make it great. It will probably be more like "Oh hey, let's just pay these folks to check out the building" rather than stealth-ninja-like skillz on display but that's fine.

What are you worried about? It’s not like a bunch of people are going to join the site and flood it with shitty photos and crappy locations and earn FM without any real effort at all or contribute solid content.

Oh wait...

Scott Brothers Entertainment is going to find people stupid enough to do all the work for them to build a sizzle reel. They will take advantage of stupid glory seekers who want attention. They will follow some idiots around to a few locations and cut it all together with some shitty interviews where the “explorer” explains why they do it, why it’s so important and what it means to them. Then they’ll take it to a network. The network will think it’s great. The network lawyers however will not. It won’t fly. It’s too much liability to produce a show where your talent and your crew are breaking the law. Will that stop the show? No. They network will buy it’s way into these locations so all liabilities are cleared and they will shoot and cut the show in such a way that most viewers will think that these explorers are breaking the law.

All reality TV is a lie.

At least after that, if someone sees your photos you won’t have to go into your standard redundant monolog about what Urban Exploration is and why you do it. Instead they’ll just say “Oh! I know about that! Just like on that show!”

I don't see how this will work unless they get permission from said places they explore. At that point is it really exploring?

Meh, so what? The more people are awakened to their environments, the better. Well, I guess they should be the "right" people, not taggers or destroyers. It really doesn't bother me that the uninitiated will dig the explores, they may have a viewpoint that is interesting and as valid as anyone's. Also, I'll defend the Property Bros.; they do a great job on their current shows and while they tend to be a bit douchey, I don't really care, just show me that open-concept floor plan dammit.

I shoot content for seven diffirent shows that air on HGTV. HGTV is one of many channels owned by Scripts network. Scripts is the cheapest paying network, and one of the most uptight networks as far as content, censorship and liability. Maybe, Scripts will buy a season of this, if so, it would probobly air on The Travel Channel (also owned by Scripts) and I promise you they will not let anyone break any laws. They will buy their way onto the property and present that these explorers are tresspassing.

I don't just shoot content for HGTV and DIY. I also work for A&E, Discovery, Nat Geo and MYV.

I'll say it again.

All. Reality. TV. Is. A. Lie.

Cool. Then you won't be disappointed.

I've been down this road before, with Scripts Network, for a show about explorers on HGTV/DIY/Travel Channel in 2010

Their lawyers said "Fuck No."

Funny, I think Scripts (Scripps?) is in Cincinnati, not far from here. My wife did a software install with them a while back. Weird how we now watch their shows nightly after not having anything to do with them until recently.

Reality tv is a lie is not a thing to me; i don't invest any thought or emotion aside from "oh, that's a cool house" or "Will they love it or will they list it? I bet they list it." Sorry stuff didn't work out for you w/the tv stuff, coulda been a cool show as well. I watched that video about New York recently, it was well done and in high-def, I hope that if this comes to fruition it's like that.

Ah! You're right. Scripps, not Scripts. I'm doing my taxes and my brain is fried.

I'm not against a great show with quality content about people who go into abandoned buildings and/or take great photos of them. I just don't think that will happen.

I'm not against shitty TV, it's like pop music and I have a soft spot for pop music. It's like going to the movies and watching them like kids do. -You don't look for holes in the plot or bad CGI, you like it cause it's fun.

I guess we'll all find out. It'll be fun or stupid, it'll be enjoyable for us to watch or it'll make it harder for us to explore.

I'm glad the sizzle pitch didn't work out cause it would have been a disaster under the terms they brought to the table.

Sounds an awful lot like that show on Nat Geo except for lack of profit from the "explorers."

Hmm...the only way to pull this off is to allow the explorers to film the location themselves. ABSOLUTELY NO outside camera crew or the show will look cheap and made up(aka, the Urban Explorers flop that Discovery Channel tried to pull off). So that would require explorers with videography skills. I think they could pull it off, if they are willing to let the explorers do their thing.
And on the issue of locations, urban exploration is urban exploration. How you get into a location is not what makes it an urbex sight or not. Sure, sneaking in is more legit, fun and attention grabbing(I'd honestly prefer this way), but if they get permission to go on a site, I don't see why that would detract from the beauty of the site at all.
Just my two cents.

Scott Brothers Entertainment aren't the only production company looking for urbex talent. There are a couple out there at the moment all trying to develop similar ideas, but with minor variations. They email me every now and then to ask questions.

Dammit Yokes. Get in here and throw a link to the episodes!
