Location status updating.

I've noticed many locations on the DB that are labeled as "being demolished" or "totally demolished" and yet still not available to basic members due to someone not wanting anyone to see it. is this acceptable? If it was being demolished in 2004, chances are it's gone now and therefore poses no security/safety risk for noobs.

Now given I'm a full member, I still remember what it was like to be a noob, and keeping places that are gone from being available to basic members doesn't seem fair. I know I could edit the details, but I really don't want to on someone else's DB entry, not knowing the etiquette on such things, and there's always the chance they just forgot to update it.

So, what's expected in this situation? leave it alone, edit it, contact the person(s) who added the location?

PM the member who added it to the DB. even if it is demolished I still think it should be up to the person who made the entry to decide whether or not to go public with it.

I've updated status on a few database entries that were good and solidly gone, verified as such. It is a public database entry. It's only so good as the data it contains. If the data is bad, I don't see any cause for someone to be butthurt if the data is fixed.

Of course, your mileage and amount of butthurt encountered may vary.

I've gone through most of my local UE-DB Locations and I updated them. If the location is demolished - not much you need to protect.

Skye, I agree, and Vectored, I'm not butthurt, just wondering what's the best way to address the issue.

changing info on an entry should be done by a mod or the o.p. contact the o.p. for an update, no reply? contact a mod. updating a location with creditable info is allowed, but try to keep the op in the loop. unsolicited bullshit additions or changes are not welcome.......

edit: not to sound harsh, but I had a location altered with bullshit info.

Okay I can agree somewhat. If it is a FM only entry I would be contacting the OP and asking for permission to change things around. Personally I don't want anyone touching my FM entries unless it is to add a photo gallery of their own.

I have messaged OP's when I've added changed to their Encyclopedia entries.

Wait, what? UER has an Encyclopedia?

going thru a mod is another option. Steed is very helpful when it comes to DB related things. I've also messaged Avatar with DB inquiries in the past. It is his baby after all.

I've also requested one of my DB entries be deleted in the past b/c a handful of people from the PSW complained about it at every opportunity they could.

I also won an "Explorie" from Yield for that same entry.

I think sometimes there should be some sort of discretion, but not always. There are a few locations here I have updated. I keep decent tabs on locations where I live. When something changes, I often put up new information. For example, there is an outdoor theater, it's nothing now. Literally just field. So, I put it was demolished. There is a hospital I live near, it's been abandoned for almost 2 decades and I update info when I drive by. and post pics. I think it depends on the location, really. I didn't ask the two guys who made the locations because...it was noncontroversial information, and the guys who made them haven't been on for months/years.

No, any full member is free to update the information. If the system were working properly, there would be an efficient mod approval system in which mods review the posts and verify them. However, we're far behind. But that is the official UER system.

If someone is vandalising LDB entries, that is an offence we take seriously and it should be reported. I can understand wanting to protect information, but not through misinformation.

So, if you know a location is gone, you may change the status. Might as well make a post in the location entry to make the process a little more transparent, but it's within your right to improve or update any entry.

I saw a video of a power plant being imploded the other day, so I changed that to demolished. That way people who search for the place get to see photos of what it was like inside. But it all depends. I've learned time and time again that there are campuses that have only one well known building, but many other hidden gems. So you may think the building demolished is the only thing to see there and it's okay, but in that case it's probably better to message the OP.

In actual fact it is not possible for a FM to modify the security settings anyway. You may modify the details but not the security. So you'd have to contact the location creator or a mod (probably the former out of respect).

People tend to rarely go back to the actual location and check up on it thus no current updates. (I say 'tend', not 'never')

Good question. Perhaps it would be possible to give validation privileges to some members willing to help out? We could ask Av.
