Who sets and defines these "ranks" for UrbEx? What do you consider yourself to be? Why is "Kevin" considered a "Pro explorer, brah." to you?

Whatever y'all call it, all I do is see an abandonment, have an optimistic mindset for getting in-n-out, and roll the dice. If I had to label myself, it would be "Fearless Explorer", I guess, because I know [ I ] am the one in control of what I'm walking into.

Honestly, I would be hesitant to call myself anything greater than a noob or an inexperienced explorer, due to the fact that I rarely have the opportunity to explore anything. I really only am able to do any exploring once or twice a month, because I'm away at college most of the time.

That being said, I wouldn't be afraid to call myself a natural explorer. For my entire life, out of all my friends and acquaintances, I've been the one to wander off from the pack in favor of exploring and going on an adventure of my own. I've always been pretty fearless about going into tunnels as a kid, or wandering into off limits areas such as places labeled "employees only" or "private property". Naturally, that just led to me being the Urban Explorer that I am today.

Pretty much are two ranks: normal, and dedicated. A lot of people will want to do an explore if say, their friends are doing it, but not a lot of people really get into exploring and make it a hobby.

Umm, wut? Yeah...
Either you stride in like you own the place or you run around like a frightened chicken on a hot sidewalk.
I did my fair share of cautious exploring and now that I really don't give a fuck, everything's MUCH easier for me to digest. I used to ask myself a million questions on the ethics of it all, putting myself through a shitload of needless stress and stalking around like I was skating on ultra-thin ice.
It didn't work out for me and I lost a lot of respect, most of it self-respect.
Now I'm on the point of the vanguard, leading the charge.
I got sick of being a lily-livered, weak pussy and you will too.
It takes about three bad experiences with the local police and at least two hours in the back of a cop's Crown Vic to work it all out.
Now it's as natural as the Pabst Blue Ribbon beer shits but it wasn't always that way.
Experience is the mother of invention. In due time you'll be the one making Caesar give YOU a rim job. Live and learn.

"Are you happy now with all the choices you've made?" "Are there times in life when you know you should've stayed?"
"Will you compromise and then realize the price is too much to pay?" "Winners and losers... which one will you be today?"

Who sets and defines these "ranks" for UrbEx?

i don't see the point of your question. rank only exists in an organization with recognized hierarchy. "urbex" is not an organization, it is an activity. likewise there's no rank for walking through the woods, or balancing a spoon on your nose.

maybe there are some exploration clubs out there with ranks. guess you'd have to ask them individually. hierarchy on uer.ca has little to do with how experienced you are, and more to do with how much you participate in the website.

feel free to make your own rank though, if it matters.

Ranks are for people who like accolades and need self affirmation, unless there's an organization that needs that kind of structure. Exploring isn't like that. We're a team when together and on our own when not. I don't report to any explorer because I am supposed to, I do it out of courtesy and friendship.

There are explorers whom I respect more than others but that doesn't make them any higher "rank" than anyone else. Just like any other type of group.

This isn't a contest.

Ranks? Whatever. I enjoy it, I know my limits and try to push them. I haven't been to any really off the beaten path locations yet but what I have seen and done I am not only proud of but very glad for the experiences I've had. I'm surely a noob to this board and community but you gotta start somewhere, right? I just want to have a good time, see some sights, take some photos and breath in some mold. (Not so much the last part, really)

If you dress like a marine or ninja & carry more equipment than a simple camera, flashlight, and beer, your rank is lower than mine.

That's all I know.

There you go! You get it. Everyone else read too deep into the mention of "ranks".
Come on now, people. That was a clear misunderstanding. I don't believe in any ranking crap either.

This is a silly thread.

Who cares how others define themselves? Just go explore, and don't be an ass about it to others.
