When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.

You pulled some interesting subjects. Nice job.

I don't think I've seen wooden bricks before.

I have seen them in a few places. No idea why they are used... Dust control? Sound control?

But... they do weird shit when they get wet and freeze...

I saw them in a steam locomotive repair shop once, way back over twenty years ago. We were told that they were used because dropped tools were less likely to break if they landed on wood rather than stone.

It was more comfortable to stand on for long periods of time, Gary's post office has them in the sorting area, too. Alot of older buildings did, and I'm told it was a major contributor to the spread of the Great Chicago Fire.

Large factories in the good old days used the wood block flooring (Often Swamp Oak, the floor in Gary's Post Office is maple) because when they had to work on machines or change them out for newer ones (Which happens more often than you'd think) you could pull up a small portion of floor quickly and replace it easily. It is still used in some modern factories, though most big ones are going to concrete with anti-fatigue mats for the workers. Ford found out the hard way when they pulled up the wood in the Ford Heights plant in the 1980's, worker back and knee injuries skyrocketed until softer flooring was installed over it. Go figure.
This bit of useless trivia brought to you by my dad, after seeing photos of Packard's flooring.

I'd heard that the wood factory floors were there in part to reduce machine vibrations and in part to absorb small amounts of oil/grease that would spill or leak out of equipment. The other explanations in this thread make about as much sense though, imo.
