to me, learning to manipulate light was the next obvious step in maintaining my passion for this hobby. These days, I shoot almost entirely at night, and wouldnt have it any other way. Of course there are good techniques and bad techniques, but this is supposed

One more tip for all you lightpainting enthusiasts: if you have the time, take the same shot 5 times. Even if you paint it exactly the same, every shot will look slightly different and one of them will be the best. Keep them all and choose at home. And if you're not too sure about your lighting, you might want to experiment in those 5 shots with different lighting positions and styles. Hell, make it 10 shots. In my experience one of them will pop out as the obvious winner.

In daylight I'm all about the 'get it right the first time' approach and only take 1 shot per composition(and if it doesn't look good on the LCD, delete and repeat). But in the dark is all different. Subtile differences aren't really visible on the LCD but can make or break a lightpainted picture. It feels awesome to see that one killer shot in your row of 5, and you'll be glad that you didn't walk away after the first shot. Give it a try ;)

Thank you. The magnet back work lights I modified worked well on the lockers.

I had to google what it is, and for the most part I agree with you, but there are some interesting ones, like this one on page 1 of the search results.

I see this is a mega old topic now, but I'll weigh in. A lot of light-painting is the same... but it's not some 'fad' for me. I've been light-painting for nearly 10 years now and I work by one golden rule: The light-painting should NOT be the only subject in the photo, but as much as possible, serve to enhance the subject. Any jackass can wave lights around in front of a camera.

That being said my light-painting has given me more attention than any other work I've done. ever.

All light-painted:

"The time of getting fame for your name on its own is over. Artwork that is only about wanting to be famous will never make you famous. Fame is a by-product of doing something else. You don't go to a restaurant and order a meal because you want to have a shit."
