Yeah, I like that kinda stuff Calvin. I don't consider that light "painting", though.

@NotBatman, your first shot is killer! Care to explain how you got it illuminated so far and bright and without too much ghosties?

Thanks.

It's actually something on the order of a five minute exposure, and I'm walking up and down the tunnel through it. I have a diffuser on my flashlight and I make sure to keep my body between the light and the camera, turning the light off whenever I need to turn around or fiddle with something.

It can make for some cool shots, but it does tend to eliminate shadows, so...

I'm generally of the opinion that light painting photos are more fun to take than to look at, but Calvin's shots are an exception to that rule. Good stuff!

I like that the slam thread to light painting has become the examples of good stuff thread.

I'll add a few of my own horrible donkey kong poop piles.

You're not the only one, it's just that there is a plethora of crappy "light painting" that's gone viral. Unfortunately, the recent usage of the term "light painting" was hijacked by people who point lights into the camera and draw lines with lights. Of the other variety (lights pointed at the scene), I'm a practitioner and a fan, when tastefully done.

Examples of my style (which is more the school of Lost America/Calvin Kaneda):

I've switched to mostly using multiple color temperatures of white light instead of colored lights, but that's just my taste. I still love Lost America's comic book styles. To each there own though. There is some serious fun to be had with either of the styles.

I can't help but make fun of people that mainly "explore" to burn spinning steel wool or those loops & patterns that look like they were photoshopped in.

But sometimes light painting is handy, like the image below may be a mess but it shows you the size of the place pretty well I guess.

Is pouring fuel on a candle (in 1994) considered light-painting or just stupidity?

On my phone I just do the reverse pinch with my fingers to make it bigger & it's fine.

I'll have a look when on my computer next.

Cheers

The coloured stuff can often go overboard; I much prefer more subtle/underpowered shots of that ilk. It's OK. freeside posted "the term "light painting" was hijacked by people who point lights into the camera and draw lines with lights." and that's correct, and exactly the type of useless crud I see all too often*. The shots he posted are examples that I love, but I don't consider that "light painting", it's just creative lighting. *Perhaps a subtle semantics difference, but it means a lot IMO. I paint - it involves moving a paint brush around. Creative use of static light positions does not equate to "light painting" how I interpret it.

I guess maybe I have a slightly different perspective on photography. To me photography is art and the photographer is the artist. I don't believe that the sole purpose of the art of photography is to capture an unadulterated image of the world around us. Certainly, it can be that. But it is limited to that. da Vinci and Rembrandt painted stunning real life pictures. Does that mean that Monet, van Gogh, or Dali were somehow lesser artists?

I say put it all out there! Real life, light painting, HDR, panorama, lens whacking...whatever each artist wants to share. I may like it. I may not. My approval has no bearing whatsoever on the "value" of the image. The photographer...the artist... is the first and last judge of the work.

Just my .02 for the evening.

I enjoy a little light painting when done right. Not the crazy stuff though.

Here is one of my first times trying it.

Like anything else, I thought it was cool the first bunch of times I saw it done, then in typical herd mentality tons of people started doing it and it lost its pizazz . Some people still raise the bar with something new light painting wise that catches my eye.. but for the most part, while all still well done, you can only see the same concept over and over again before its not special... I will admit maybe im late on the boat with it, but the colored light painting stuff ive seen in this thread is the first time ive seen it done like that, and I think its pretty cool

I totally agree and it gets a bit old watching folks posture and brag about a skill set they dont really posses or a technique they actually know little about.

I paint - it involves moving a paint brush around. Creative use of static light positions does not equate to "light painting" how I interpret it.

Perhaps I can explain the term light painting and add a bit more clarity on the subject.

In certain instances when I find myself in a very dark location I will find how and where I should "paint" with my handheld flashlight. This involves setting up a bulb shot and swinging a flashlight in your hand at a pretty decent rate of speed, back and forth and up and down....in essence "painting". To cover a subject properly you need to make sure this is done quickly enough to canvass the area properly and evenly while using the correct exposure time for the amount of light distributed. You have to pay attention to foreground subjects so they dont blow out and background areas so they are not under-lite. Its tricky, definitely takes some practice and looks a bit goofy during the process but the results can be very nice with the right technique.

Hope this helps.
