Don't get me wrong it has it's place in doses. But for me at least it cheapens a really nice photo with special effects. Its almost as bad as people who blow the contrast up on a pic for that weird look.

I don't even edit my photos. I just take pictures with my iPhone, and think they look pretty great the way they are. Maybe if I owned a better camera, or knew how to do any of that, I would, but I like my photos enough that I'm not going to take the time to do any of that.

Well... that depends. Technically any shot that illuminates things where there is no light would qualify as "light painting."

This is light painting:

Tuberculosis - Long by NotBatman, on Flickr

So it this:

Bannz - CockMonster by NotBatman, on Flickr

This kind of "light painting" I really get into and enjoy, when it's done well. (And to be perfectly honest, the second one could have used some more work. I still like it, though, because the subject matter cracks me up.)

Now, the weird twirly shit with light bars and such? I've seen decent examples of it, but mostly yeah, it's overplayed.

That fucking steel wool garbage, though... That shit's just got to go!

Fair enough; I was more or less referring to the twirly stuff. Yes if your in a pitch dark place and you need some light to capture a pic that is much different.

I counter point with light painting in order to create mood vs. spalooging all over the sky with sparklers.

I don't think just spinning wool in a location that wouldn't hold interest on its own propels the photo into awesomesaucedness. I'd say it's all in the subject matter but yes it is kitschy.

I think this particular thread was made with a lack of information.
I, for one, love light painting. It's an interesting way to broaden your range of photographic abilities. Is it for everyone? No. But should you sit around bagging on it? Probably not.

From your later post, you seem to think that light painting is just spinning steel wool. I personally love that (and I have the scars to prove it), but light painting has it's abilities that create a less realistic effect. Not all Art is the same. For example, comparing my work to Axle (who is an amazing photographer), is like comparing Dali and Warhol to Kinkade or Windberg. It's not reasonable.

If you're bored of steel wool, I get it. But light painting is diiverse. All of these shits were a single exposure with NO EDITING AT ALL. No effects. No layering. Just long exposures and light manipulation. Personally, I think it's more my niche, than other things...so I do it because I enjoy it. No need to hate on it.

I respect all artists opinions and rights to create whatever it is they like. But when I think of great photographers I think of works from the likes of Walker Evans, Don McCullin, Adams and others. I guess I am just old lol. I may be wrong and often I am but I see light painting as a fad that when all is said and done it won't stick as great work 50 years from now.

I think some of it has potential. Just as much as any other art does, really. Have you ever actually done it, though? I don't do it because I want to be famous or remembered...I do it because I love it. I do it because it's fun. I do it for me. I share it because improvement is always an option, by me and anyone who wants to learn. I don't think light painting will ever fade out, overall. I do it with film, too.

I toyed around with it because my friend does a lot of it. It is just not my thing and I didn't mean to completly trash it. I do think some of it is real good. But I am old fashion so take that for what its worth. Besides abandoned stuff I mainly prefer black and white and low sepia stuff. Here is an example of stuff I like to shoot.

Agree to disagree, m'dear. Just don't bash it too hard. It's fun, and that should be enough to justify it.

Also:
Noel's work is fucking amazing. His work will forever be timeless.

Can't argue with that. If you love what you shoot that is all that matters.

For some of us who love to shoot at night or prefer low-lite photography it can be an essential tool for bringing out subjects in the foreground or adding depth and dimension. This helps to sometimes bring balance and/or provides a spacial anchor for an image that might not otherwise work.

Here's an example. If the boat was pitch black like everything else was that night, no one would even know what it was much less what it represented in the image.

Even with the benefit of available outside street lights there is no way I would have captured this image properly at night without my trusty 200 lumen sure-fire.

I find this kind of photography very challenging and extremely diverse as far as what you can do, what you can capture and what you can get away with when using a little extra light.

People will always have a personal opinion on what they do/do not like and photography is a diverse and multifaceted hobby but this is also what makes it so interesting and fun.

I remember when I was a kid in the 80's and saw light painting photos for the first time. You know, back in the days of film-only. It is a technique that is pretty much as old as photography and isn't going to go away (especially considering that all photography is some form of light "painting")
Just like any other corner of art there are more bad examples available than good ones and I don't go ape shit over the bad ones. Every now and again I see something that makes me go "Wow" and gives me a fresh perspective on an old subject or just pain leaves me wondering how exactly they did that. I've learned (from my own failures) how hard it is to create really striking images and will always appreciate it when someone else does; even if they're doing something I've seen done poorly a hundred times before.
Anyway, to Astro- that was my somewhat long winded way of saying great shot for the steel wool photo you posted, it is best I've ever seen and I had gone into this thread in total agreement with the OP until I got to your post. Thank you.
