And I was considering bringing a clipboard or something and just acting like I belonged and hopefully no one will care enough that I'm there.

Why does everybody thinks that a clipboard makes you look you belong there?
Most GIS systems are on a tablet or cellphone or such.

Like said before make yourself look like you belong there.

I for example have a amber flashing light in my vehicle, it's professional one, and when parked on the side of a highway, people change lanes for me in Texas as they follow a law saying that you have to change lanes for certain vehicles when having red, blue or amber flashing lights on.

Also, traffic cones can work wonders. Even PD doesn't check on me when I have the light on and three cones behind my vehicle.

So a clipboard doesn't make you look like you belong there, it actually make you look weird.

I just did my first visit to a site found in the public location database here..

More of a scouting trip than anything.. I'm a photographer and I've learned to not expect dynamite results on the first time to a location...

Anyway.. I chose to go on a Monday afternoon.. I like the midday sun when I intended to document something vs. the added hues of dawn/dusk.

I figured if I was caught I would rely on the truth defense.. Professional gear, no tools, act all friendly & harmless.

Did end up getting an acceptable shot or 2.. Will be doing a update for the database as soon as I'm done with the forums..

Sunrise is great, seeing as there are very few people up that early (in the areas where I have been, sunrise is 5 am). This means fewer random passersby, and usually lighter security.

I am not much of a early riser, and my friend that I usually explore with works second shift so he usually sleeps until late morning. We usually go on a weekday, generally Friday. During the afternoon. It really depends on the location, but I have found weekday afternoons work great. There is a hospital in the area we explore pretty often. Four times on weekday afternoons and we have not seen another soul in there. The one time my buddy and his brother went on a Sunday there were some other people in the complex.

I'm more of a hiding-in-plain-sight kind of guy, so mid-afternoon is my preferred time. Most people have more important things to worry about, so even if you're seen, you're probably okay. On top of that, you never want to be absolutely alone. If something happens to you and you can't get out, no one will be able to hear you if no one is around.

I've found that you can hit abandonments anytime, really. I personally like to go at night, in part for the creep factor but also because I don't sleep much and I work afternoons.

For construction sites though, it has to be at night - and even then, there'll be the odd guy popping in at a weird hour to grab tools or finish a thing.

For me, the only exception is Detroit. That place is something special, and requires special precautions because of it.

Generally early weekend mornings are the ideal time to get into more high-risk locations especially during the summer months when it's light very early.

However I've explored derelict buildings at every time of day in every weather. I love exploring in terrible weather as generally it keeps nosey neighbours inside but then again the photos can suffer because of it. I really don't like exploring at night, I avoid it unless I absolutely have to because I think it's a lot more suspect if you get caught somewhere you shouldn't be at night rather than say a Wednesday afternoon in broad daylight when the cops or secca if you're unlucky enough to run into them can clearly see you and what your intentions are.

The single best days to explore out of the entire year? Christmas Eve (and Boxing Day in the UK too)

I have a tan-ish colored collared shirt (stains are hard to see on it) that I keep in my car, and I usually put it on when going into a place if there's people or security around, and either pretend to talk or be writing something on my smart phone when I go in and out of buildings. It's worked every time for me so far (although I haven't done a ton of explorations recently). One time a security guy started driving up to me and I just waved and kept walking and he waved back and turned around. I only mention the shirt because when I'm not at work I usually only wear an undershirt or a hoody, but I feel like when there's people that could be suspicious, looking the part and acting like I'm supposed to be there goes a long way.

This is pretty well my philosophy, except I like a bit before noon. No real reason to get up super early unless you want that picture of the sunrise, so I'm generally out and about at 9-10am.

I tend to do all mine after sundown on weekends (now that I have a big kid job that requires M-F 9-5 hours, used to do weekdays though when fewer people were out). It was generally just easier for us to get in and out of drains at night, and, living in a college town, most people are either 1. too drunk to care about what you're doing (drains, rooftops) or 2. assume you are also drunk and just stumbling around downtown. Although the sugar mill I did out on the plains we pre-dawned because of the potential hazards. I'm just always afraid to get caught during the day because my social engineering skills are only average.
