Times to explore

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering what time of day might be the best to explore in terms of lighting, getting caught, and etc.

One of the places I'm looking at exploring is on a busy-ish road and I'm nervous about a lot of people being around.

Like everything, it depends.

For abandoned buildings, I very much prefer the daylight. Aside from being able to clearly see holes in the floor and other hazards, you also don't have to be especially careful with your light. Shining a flashlight around in an abandoned building at night is FAR more likely to draw attention.

Active buildings are generally better during the day, when people are around and expected to be there, but night is a great time for a nice view of the skyline.

Something along a busy route, you may need to consider the option of "pre-dawning" where you make your way in while it's still dark, but then get the advantages of daylight soon after.

You specifically mention lighting, so I'll assume you have some interest in photography. In which case you already know that the best natural light is in the early morning, late evening being a close second.

Underground largely doesn't matter, but I still prefer daytime, because every now and then you catch a piece of natural light while deep in a cave or drain and it can be really striking.

(I also prefer daytime because I have a real job and a family and I just can't stay out until four in the morning with any regularity.)

The best time of day for getting caught is less open for debate.

Between 5:30PM and about 7:00PM.

No question.

Chances are of anyone noticing you are very low. Act like you belong there. For the more risky places earlier the better.

I was thinking early morning would be good. Especially since if I can get to the roof the sunrise will hit the building perfectly.

And I was considering bringing a clipboard or something and just acting like I belonged and hopefully no one will care enough that I'm there.

And thanks for your input guys!

That actually makes a lot more sense now that I think about it.

I only explore between 10:45 AM and 5:15 PM. I don't fucking care if you just flew over from Russia to come explore with me, if it's 5:20, you can hop right back on that plane to the motherland, chump.

Almost always between 9 am and 5pm by virtue of doing the bulk of it on my yearly camping trip.

I tend to do Sunday mornings, as the police are mellow, parking is free, and I can claim ignorance if I'm caught, and pin it on a Sunday stroll. Most of the time, you don't really need to worry about being caught. Play it off and be friendly yet mature, and the situation will right itself. If you're going for the creepy, though, go at night. However, that's also when the less than desirable crowds congregate in abandonments, so keep an eye out.

I like exploring on holidays. Less people seem to go out then in the places I usually frequent.

I recently did this for a high-risk building (elementary school) and it was so worth it. I was at the location at 6AM, right before sunrise, which was good because I was very visible from the street. I did a little wandering around before the sun rose completely then I started taking pictures. For my exit, I just checked that the road was clear and launched myself out of the building and off the roof.

During spring break or summer I'll definitely have to try pre-dawning.

I used to be up for sunrise all the time, but unfortunately that was before I was really into urbex.

I like weekends myself. Sundays always seem to be the best day as hardly anyone is ever around.
