This school was closed in 2006 because it was built on to of a landfill and there were numerous issues with methane gas leaks. Enjoy the photos! I'll be posting more within the next few days/weeks.

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.

Kewl exit sign...

#3 & 4 look artistically scary.

Great find with that school!
What is the story behind this place?

This school was built in the late 1950s and it is right next to one of the most dangerous housing projects in my city. While it was open, the population was approximately 98% African American and it was closed several times due to the detection of methane gas and failing methane gas alarm systems. The School board decided to shutter the building entirely in 2006 because the location was deemed hazardous (It was built on a landfill).

Interesting story because I like abandoned schools. The murals of the multi-racial children are beautiful. Did the school board erect another elementary school nearby?

To my knowledge they haven't replaced the school. I did some research and an article in 2006 said that the School Board decided to integrate the children into 8 other local schools.

Nice write-up! From the little research I did, I was under the impression that the school opened back up, two years ago, with major opposition from the locals. Is that true or am I confusing this with a different location?

I see what you hid there...

Anyways, not to be an attention whore, but your set reminded me of an elementary school I explored again not long ago, especially with your exit sign ha-ha:

You may be thinking of this location because it closed numerous times over the years due to the problems with methane gas. However, these photos were taken less than a week ago and as you can tell it is still very closed.

Yeah Norrell is no longer vacant unfortunately. I wonder if anyone got photos of it before it reopened. I take it you're from the area?

Nope, I'm in Oklahoma. I just enjoy researching things. I love abandoned schools and lucky for me they are fairly well documented when they shut down.
