Dolores, I live in fear.
The best stuff hides behind these crafty signs. However, I've never had the gall to push one open. Are any bluffs? Do they shut off when they're closed?

Please, shed a little light on this strange, grey area.

Looks like you should just press it and wait out of the general area, but close enough to the general area to see if there's a response. Unless it yells. Then walk away inconspicuously.

Just remember, it's cheaper to put a sign that says "alarm will sound" than it is to actually install an alarm.

Often these doors are propped open by employees on smoke breaks, etc.

I opened one of these at my university and it was as loud as hell. I was on my way out so I just walked away casually and I never saw anyone do shit. No response. I could still hear it going off almost a block away as I was walking home.

DON'T. Do not open it. I actually happened to set one off this weekend in one of my favourite locations. The thought was always there: "Will it go off? This place has power, but nobody inside, cameras that are not working, and motion detectors to turn lights on. Screw it, let's see if I can get 2 out of 3..." and sure enough, it went off. I casually walked away. Not looking back. Did anyone show up? No idea. The local firehouse about 8 blocks away had its guys collecting money outside on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. They would have dropped the donation boot and gone into action, but nothing.
Anyways, do not try it, unless there's nothing to lose.

As everyone has already stated, they are LOUD!! But they do require power, so if your building still has juice then I wouldnt try it. They make their sound with a ramped up piezo "coin" alarm like this:

If you can find where the speaker is located (usually a pinhole of group of them) you can take a needle and punch holes through it, I would actually leave the needle in it after you jab it a few times to help pull the vibrations away from the harmonic surface. That should kill the speaker or at least make it very dull. The ones we have at work have no speaker holes and I assume the piezo speaker is under the handle somewhere, but they do go off when someone tries to take a smoke break where they are not allowed to. Hope that helps!

Edit:

I looked up the kind we have at work and this video came up. Very useful stuff here and it seems the newer ones operate on battery. They can last for 3-5 years.

The Durango '95 purred away a real horrowshow - a nice, warm vibraty feeling all through your guttiwuts. And soon it was trees and dark, my brothers, with real country dark.

Quality post right there. Never knew that about those types of doors. But I think more of the older ones that'd most explorers would be running into would be the more basic type of push door with the EM locks.

But like a previous poster said, the best way to test this would be to push it open, and go somewhere to wait. If an audible alarm does sound, you want to walk away casually, not run.

I think it depends on what kind of alarm it is, and in the case of people propping them open, who has the keys. If it's an emergency exit and it's an active building I would be fairly cautious. In the building I work in the fire department actually checks these doors once a month to make sure that they open and the alarms sound upon opening them.

All depends where you are at, and if you are comfortable with a super loud alarm potentially going off.

That's what it comes down to really. A couple New Year's ago we were at a hotel partying and came across the roof access, and in our drunken stupor did our best to get out one of those doors... it was locked, but even after a few kicks to the bar the alarm didn't make a sound.

Just have a good out ready in case it does go off or in case there are cameras on you when you do it... you might be able to pull off the "I wasn't thinking" card if you look harmless enough. But if you are sneaking around and they are watching you on camera the entire time you will have a harder time. Just pull out a cig or something and try pushing the bar acting like you own the place. And if the alarm goes off, swiftly make your exit. I wouldn't run and draw attention.

Sometimes it's a loud general alarm, sometimes it's just a piezo goingoff near the door, sometimes it's just a local alarm at the main pannel/keypad and sometimes it's nothing... Take a guess!

The more money this spot is willing to invest, the more likely this is true. But, as Ninj told us, look for wires; otherwise it's a bluff.
