After perusing the building twice over, today I found the roof access staircase for a Harvard building. After happening upon a maintenance crew standing by the door, I decided another day of following the rules was better than a disagreement with two hot headed, muscular Bostonians.

But I got to wondering...has anybody here rooftopped an active building? It sounds like a fun little thing to check out when you're in the city. If so, what struggles did you meet and how were they conquered?

I think it's become more popular than exploring abandoned buildings, at least where I live.

I do it quite often. I find it entertaining to figure a way up to the roof, be it climbing the side of it or up a flight of stairs behind a door. Just detour inside an active building to the nearest door, and stairs! It's nice seeing cities from new angles sometimes. No real struggles, except when climbing down and vertigo is like, Now seems like a good time to stop by.

Aren't the majority of them alarmed when you get to the actual door to the roof itself?

Some. Some are just locked with a bolt. Some have alarm signs but don't actually have an alarm. Just gotta give it a yank and find out!

Most say they are, but aren't. Some just use those little magnet alarms, and it's a luck on the draw with those. Otherwise, No trespassing sign or danger authorized personnel only, etc. Not much stopping people.

The rooftop on the main building at the University of Texas (the one with the tower) is easily accessible and really cool to visit. You just have to be careful about when you go because there are multiple windows looking up to and down to it.

Since then, I've begun checking roof access doors to see if they're unlocked.

Is it true that some can be rigged up to a silent alarm, which will get relayed to a security station?

It's possible but I've never ever seen it used in practice. On another note my friends and I often climb around UC Berkeley (the fenced off parts) just for shits and giggles. We've been on top of several roofs, we actually snuck into their basketball stadium over the summer, it was huge and dark and eerie 1.

Take a look on the door and see if they have any wires running to it. You can check to see if they have a current with the right tool. Sometimes even those are for looks. If you still don't know, just open it and see what happens from a safe distance.

I prefer hitting up construction sites. The unbuilt will not have alarms yet. However, construction sites come with their own, different set of risks.

Construction sites in my area started putting motion detectors that set off very loud alarms when they caught on to people climbing cranes and posting pictures

Yep, all the construction sites near me have trailers with motion/flood lights/camera monitoring/alarm. Keeps tools and materials from walking off. Makes exploring virtually impossible.

You'd be surprised how much money even some basic construction materials are worth. When I heard how much a pallet of wood cost, I was shocked.

off topic: where I worked, pallets are like gold. not only that but most places make you return them to receive your deposit back.

It depends on the pallet, of course.

If it's shitty pine, no one gives a fuck.

If it's made out of some kind of classy hardwood, then the accountants get involved.

I used to work for a warehouse/shipping company. Most pallets didn't matter. The warehouse guys would try and get rid of the bad ones quicker but, whatever, that's what EVERY place does.

The nice, hard wood, branded pallets, though... that was a different story. If you requested one, then we expected an equal amount of empties in return. If you weren't returning empties, we'd bill you at the end of the month.

Most pallets are shitty pine garbage, but the good ones get inventoried.

One of my hobbies is Parkour and Freerunning. I think it goes together pretty well with exploring because you can get to places that you wouldn't normally be able to get to. I always explore the rooftops of active buildings, and have found a lot of hidden things and access points to things I never even knew existed. Kinda like a hidden city. For example, I was exploring the rooftops of downtown in my city, and I've found abandoned buildings in between active buildings, hidden alleyways, holes that drop into closed-off construction sites, etc. I've climbed a lot of roofs and I've never encountered an alarm system on anything, even on roofs where there supposedly was an alarm. Only way to find out it to climb it I suppose.

Rooftopping is an awesome way of exploration.

Rooftops are beautiful!
The ones I've been to don't have bolted doors or whatever.
You just have to be lucky, that's what it's all about. If the place is abandoned, then you have the green light. If the building isn't, then you are better off using your "spidey powers" and not look down.
