UER Parents?

Today, I was cruising the town on a drive with my mother. As we passed an old, beautiful abandoned building, she stopped the car. When I asked her what's up, she said she was just appreciating the building. My two brain cells aligned, and I asked her, "Wonder what's inside?" She looked over to me, and grinned.

She then told me of how she was once an explorer, and toured New England looking at hotels and homes in the backwoods. We had a wonderful conversation, and ended up poking around a factory together.

Anybody else have explorer parents, or have elder explorers in their lives?

My mother used to explore the closed portions of a state hospital where she worked when she was on breaks or while patients were sleeping on 3rd shift. She's told stories of playing cards in the morgue amongst body parts, fetuses, and pieces of brains in jars. She also used her ID to get onto a movie set to take pictures for me, which was cool of her, and continues to make sure I've been to the few places she's alerted me to check out.

Except for driving through a closed campus, I never actually explored anything WITH her, but I definitely would. I think that would be a fun experience.

When I was a little kid my friend's mom decided that we weren't getting enough exercise and took us on a walk on the train tracks. Funny thing is, I though she was pretty fucking insane at the time tbh (I was 6), but now I still go on those same tracks, coincidentally.

From the opposite perspective, I've taken both of my kids exploring. My daughter doesn't like underground, but my son digs it. I'm hoping they have fond memories that they can keep after I'm long gone.

When I first started talking my family about exploring, I was telling my grandmother about a few abandonments and she actually started listing them off. She knew exactly where a few of the locations I was going to were. As a matter of fact, it turned out that she had been exploring in some of the locations about a decade previously, with my mother. Go figure?

She enjoyed seeing my photos after so many years.

My Dad's a 30 year veteran of the Philadelphia Fire Department and he's the one that told me all about Byberry. He was there weekly putting out fires and knew the place like the back of his hand. When I started going in, he'd ask me if I saw this or that and told me where to look.

One time I mentioned exploring at a family gathering, and my grandfather started talking about how he and is friends would explore the sewers in Detroit back in the 1930s and 40s.

I take my 9 year old daughter with me a lot, she really loves it and it makes for some fun quality time together. Now if I can just get her not to tell her teachers that her dad and her have fun by partaking in less than legal activities....

I have explorer parents. They're the reason I got into this kind of stuff in the first place. They don't really do any high-risk places (at least not anymore), but they love ghost towns and mines, and love to explore the occasional abandoned building.

My Dad told me he went into an old farmhouse and took a chair and restored it by sanding and painting it at a teenager.

I am a "UER Parent."

For a while, when he was six, he was really into it and really liked crawling back to the end of every narrow passage he could get into. By the time he was seven he was completely jaded and stopped being interested in anything other than the bats. Soon even that wasn't enough.

He'll come back around, eventually.

It came up at school, a couple times, leading to an interesting conversation between xRedx and one of his teachers.

I'm a "Leave only footprints, take only pornography" kind of guy, myself.
