If you use sidewalk chalk, make sure that you mark low enough along the pipe so that when the next heavy flow occurs, the markings will get washed away. Otherwise it could get like the spray paint in some larger drains where water never reaches the upper sections of the pipe.

Or you could go all Hansel and Gretel and bring breadcrumbs...

If I do that though, I'm kind of concerned that the chalk might wash away while I'm in there. I think that I might just bring a spray bottle of water and wash them off on my way out.

For the mine map I used Google Sketchup. It is roughly to scale, based on some old maps and modern maps stitched together and aligned with the layout of the mine.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Very cool. Going to an abandoned Nazi camp right now. Pretty amped.

In a stormdrain...
Follow the flow until you see the glow.

Unless the outlet is under water... or grilled off.

I've been lost a few times after getting out and trying to find my way back to my car (before Google Maps on the mobile phone).

I wasn't lost, but the minute I entered the quarries under Paris I had no idea where I was going.

As our fine exploring comrade mentioned earlier, mines can be a real bastard.
We were in one system and dropped through a hole in the floor into another tunnel below. The tunnel was low & required stoop so by the time we'd explored this system (about an hour) we walked under the entrance into the other system 3 or 4 times. We didn't panic but this was NOT the best mine to get lost in.

Cheers

No one has suggested it so I will... the normal thing to do when spelunking is to use a cord or rope of some kind that you pull with you the entire way through the cave. I realize you're not going into a cave, but you could do the same thing. Also, I'm not too far from Lake Erie, so I'm wondering what state you plan on doing this? If it's North East OH or North West PA, I'm interested. I realize Lake Erie is much bigger than just that area, so let me know.

I was going to suggest a rope too (fishing line probably the best bet) as I've done the same in caves too. However I figured a few hours in a drain would probably end up taking too much rope/line. But it's a great idea for shorter distances.

Everyone has a dark side, mines just a little more illuminated.
