Awkward to carry your tripod? Maybe a tripod scabbard...

Hi all,

One recurring question I see on this forum is "How do I carry a tripod along when I explore?" For dedicated camera packs, this functionality is usually incorporated into the design. But what about when you have an existing pack with no accommodation for a tripod?

Here's an idea that I found when I was looking for information on modifying or sewing outdoor gear.

So apart from the camo fabric, I think the idea of a tripod scabbard that can be slung over your shoulder or attached to your pack makes perfect sense for UE. If you have a high-dollar carbon fiber tripod, you might want to invest in something like this to protect your investment.

As I sit here at my computer it occurred to me that a pant leg is pretty close to the shape and size you would want. Cutting one leg off a small pair of jeans, sewing the bottom shut, and putting a drawstring at the top would provide similar functionality. A carry strap sewn on would complete the project. Simple, cheap, and a good way to keep your tripod free of dirt and gunk.

Whether you sew up your own, buy one from this guy, or find a similar alternative, I thought this might spark some creative ideas for this common problem.

As a side note:
What got me started on sewing gear is the need for "edge protectors" that keep our ropes from being cut or abraded as we descend or climb on them. I had some old 1000 Cordura that I've sewn together and edged with 1 inch nylon webbing. My sewing skills suck, but the two I made came out Ok. Crafting my own specialized gear was kind of fun and I may find myself doing more in the near future.

Cool idea. Might have to get one of these. I know some of the camera type bags have spots to hang or attach a tripod.

This is actually a really cool awesome idea. As a video maker, I have my own tripod, but I almost never use it in Urban Exploration videos. If I was able to bring one though, I could probably set up some cool shots, demonstrating different things in a room, or just getting a more stable, wider shot of an area.

If the UER store sold these, I would definitely buy one!

I made a strap for mine, but for a while I'd considered a molle shotgun jobber that I could attach to the side of my bag.

Using the leg from an old pair of pants is both simple and brilliant!

A tripod being carried or hanging loose from your backpack looks like a tripod.
A tripod in a scabbard looks like a gun.
If an LEO thinks you're carrying a gun, you're in deep shit.

Which works perfectly for a lot of folks. I tend to do a lot of rope work and crawling though small openings which requires me to have both hands available. A scabbard isn't for everyone, but for those who don't want to carry it in-hand, it's an idea.

LEO thinking you have a gun is always a problem. All of my gun cases are much larger than a tripod scabbard. I don't see them being confused, but it could happen I guess.

I have a strap on my tripod now, but I have used the bag that holds a folding camp chair in the past to store my large tripod... why not use it to tote my tripod? that's a good question...

as for a $40 + shotgun scabbard... yeah... I will use that for my shotgun...

and as for what Ed said, thats legit.

That's a great idea! You can have a chair everywhere you explore just in case you get tired. Oh wait, you mean to put your tripod in. Seriously, a great idea.

Just hook it on to the shoulder strap of your bag. Never stopped me from doing stuff like this.

Got it. I stand corrected. I simply posted an idea for folks looking for a way to transport their tripod. Not trying to suggest that you need to change something that works for you.

That's pretty cool. I ran into that issue but I just ended up sewing straps on my bag which work fine for my purposes. Thanks for sharing!

That's actually what I've planned for my pack. I also want to put some loops on the bottom so I can strap climbing rope to it rather than trying to carry it over my shoulder. Makes sense to modify your gear to fit your needs.
