Yeah. Yeah. I know that everyone doesn't explore underground. Still, it's a pretty good reason to when it's crappy cold or nasty hot outside.

We have a tarp strung across the opening because this mine has entrances all the way up the hill, so the mine "breathes" causing a strong breeze to blow through.

Underground exploration is great!

Being from Wisconsin the cold has always been a part of exploration. Being over-prepared is the best strategy when dealing with the extreme temperatures.

I had a chance to put my gear to the test during the 49ers/Packers playoff game where temps dropped to -25F. I stayed out all afternoon tailgating and got a ticket at the last minute. The camera performed well all day, but the steel in my boots was really cold by halftime. Lesson learned: Don't be out in extreme cold for long periods of time with steel-toed boots.

So, here's a question. Typically, my partner in crime is my girlfriend. However, she tends not to do well in temps below 40 Fahrenheit. That's part of the reason that I'm here—to find others to join me when she can't. I surf during the winter so I don't mind the cold so much.

At what temperature, if any, do y'all say fuck it?

No need to specify Fahrenheit at -40; it's the same in Celsius. I just wouldn't go outside in that period.

Anything down to -20C I wouldn't think twice about so long as I can dress properly. As long as you're moving, you won't be cold, and the temperature will keep other people indoors as well.

Steed, how cold does it get in Korea at it's worst?

I don't think I've ever experienced worse than -20 here, and -20 only one or two days, though I know it gets down to -30 in other parts of the country maybe on the coldest day of the year. However, it's also a lot more humid, and it's true what they say about humidity and cold.

I'm originally from Edmonton where we're used to -30 (plus windchill), but it's a dry cold. In elementary they'd kick us outside for recess in -20 but when it was -30 we'd be allowed to sit inside. I wouldn't want to be out in anything below -30 more than absolutely necessary, because you start to feel the cold from the inside out due to breathing in cold air. Though I don't know, haven't tested myself on that, so it might be more doable if you want to be out there.

We have explored here in temperatures as low as -35C and below -50c once you factor in the wind chill. Lots of layers will do the job.

If we didn't explore in the shitty weather then we would lose half the year.

Its been -40 in winnipeg for what seems like weeks.. in the beginning of the winter I am much more motivated to get shit done, but now its just cold and I'm sick of it. Plus, I hate leaving 9000 footprints around in the snow, and my camera starts working like crap. On the plus side, if it wasn't for the cold I wouldn't of even thought of going in some places that were totally worth it. Seeing the heat has been kept on inside has become one of my new favorite things. I keep saying one more month

Back when I was still rocking little point and shoot cameras, I didn't think anything of going out and exploring when the temps were in single digits or below. But now that I have a larger camera that I can't just slip into a pocket, I don't go out as much. I will do the occasional explore in temps below 10, but not often anymore.

omg that is awesome!

I am too addicted to exploring to let extreme cold stop me, but then again, the worst I've been in was still something above zero. I live in new england so, aside from this polar vortex thing it really doesn't get THAT cold out. Plus I own a bajillion pairs of long johns and wool socks and whatnot. I actually love the winter, I'd much rather explore in the cold than in the heat! THAT I can do without.

This. Always a bonus in the winter. As Steed mentioned, Edmonton gets damn cold winters, but with the right clothing I dont mind it down to about -25C. Any colder than that and ill be "exploring" from the comfort of my warm truck!

I can personally confirm that Cosmic explores in the cold.

I like the underground in the cold. You enter with all your gear on and before long your sweating and peeling off layers. Its also nice that flooded basements are frozen basements and anything that is rotting/decaying is frozen and wont stink or at least the stench is significantly reduced.

Three good reasons to explore in the cold.

The cold never bothered me. When I lived in Vermont there was a cave we used to smoke at that was always freezing. We would go in there all the time in the winter, until I realized the group I was with was wayyy too loud and bears like to hibernate in caves.

This winter was really long and painfully cold here in Montreal. That didn't stop me from exploring the shit out of my city. In fact, I think I've never explored as much as I did during this winter.

Funny thing is that I hate cold temperatures. But, if dressed properly (longjohns, double layers of socks and shirts, and a good winter coat), the cold is bearable.

We did lots of nice explores to new and known places in Montreal, we even gathered 20+ explorers in an old incinerator for an epic meet, even though it was -20C outside.

So I'd say, stop being a pussy, and go out and explore ;)

I think coldest I've done was -38C with the windchill. My gf and I didn't last too long, thankfully we were exploring an old church that was really tiny.

We did a half a kilometer climb up a hill in the knee deep snow at about -32C... and while it was cold (we were dressed for it) we got some amazing views at an old military radar station
