Canon City Tunnels? Do they exist?

I have a friend who lives in Canon City, and he caught wind of the talk of tunnels running underneath the city. This got his attention and when he told me about it, it grabbed mine too. We have both done research on the colorful history of Canon City, but have yet to get any concrete evidence that the tunnels exist. We do know that some underground rooms exist that the locals used to hide from law enforcement back in the day, and that there are rumors that the KKK at the time had built tunnels under the city to get around. If any of you know anything about the Canon City tunnels and would like to share, we would be very grateful. Thank you!

There are supposedly some utility tunnels to the west of town somewhere but are not really large enough to get through with the piping thats in there.

Thats the only thing ive ever heard about tunnels down there. 99.9% of urban legend about tunnels is BS...

Only way to find out for sure is to go look!

a quick google search shows some tunnels/underground store fronts exist... said something about glass tiles in some sidewalks for lighting down there...

another page said something about mine workers not being welcome in town, so they did underground tunnels so they could shop, and yet ANOTHER one talked about Brothels using them to visit the wealthy.... its very surprising how little most people know about the town they live in- here no one believed that there is a missile base in chico-

most people in Sacramento dont know there is an underground store front area in Old sac....

i would go searching around town- there has to be some way in there- maybe in the basement of a business ?

We plan to do some searching around the city when we can get out there. We have been trying to find specific locations but have had little luck. I'm excited to go see if they do exist.

There are tunnels in Canon City. Here's the catch: They're in the UEDB, and are for a former water main that served the city. Said tunnels are up in the Gorge, along Tunnel Road (Go Figure...)

The wooden stave/hoop type water main froze solid one winter, and the city built the modern waterworks around this intake point, still in service today.

It's not unheard of for basements in old buildings to have alcoves under the sidewalks, with glass lights. This is where coal used to be stored. Look for a small lid or door nearby that would lead the former coal deliveries into the bin. I used to live in a old (1888) house in nearby Calhan, Colo that had a coal bin, and a similar hatch system.

Another wood stave & hoop pipe used to serve Skagway (or spelled Skaguay sometimes)Powerhouse... Bonus Points if you can dig up that old thread from 2008!
