Inside Yarn Factory Making Knitting Supplies in Listowel Ontario

Do you like knitting? Ever wonder about where your favourite brand of yarn comes from? Probably not, but if you ever did you might be tempted to drive west from Toronto to Listowel Ontario to visit the Spinrite Factory Outlet store. There you might wonder what happens down the street at the wool mill...

The tall brick building in the back was erected in the mid 1900s and was a wool mill proper with the newer parts being the washing, fulling and combing stations to prepare the wool spinning and weaving.

Today Spinrite makes beautiful coloured yarns and knitting supplies. On Tuesday Nov 12th 2013 Kader Cekerek Gave a Tour of the Spinrite Factory in Listowel Ontario

At 11am we lined up to push a button on a wall and get ear plugs which were too effective and blocked Kader's low pitch voice entirely.

I loved the colour contrast of this photo. The soft fibres will be spun into yarn for knitting. I snapped lots of terrific pictures here but I'm forbidden to publish them.

The green spools of yarn on this rack above are a composite thread for a green and blue compound twine happening further down the line.

Inside the Reeling Room, skeins of coloured yarn are wound and cut and moisturized before being packaged in paper bands. Kader says the finishing process has four stages; the wool is balled and then labelled, shrink wrapped, boxed and sent to the warehouse.

Look at the soft fuzzy pink Bernat brand yarn for knitting babies blankets, sweaters, socks and scarves for newborn babes issuing from the steel labeling machine inside the plant. This roll of Bernat pink wool yarn is sure to be used for making a girl's baby clothes.

You can read my travel blog about shopping for yarn and knitting supplies in Listowel, and see all my pictures of the Spinrite Factory Outlet store on Flickr. The photos in this post are the only ones I'm cleared to show of life inside the plant.

Read about how the land was first cleared and the very first wool mill in Listowel making yarn and knitting supplies on Dumpdiggers blog.
