I am planning a trip there hopefully in the near future.

I was just wondering if anyone knows the closest airports to fly into that are close?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I went there with a group of friends.
Are you doing an overnight tour?

Thanks for the help with the map Hootie......but it's only showing airports around where I live.....I am already familiar with those but thanks none the less.

DB, I'm not really sure if I want to do the overnight yet on top of a day time view.
I'd really like to just be left alone for a day explore, without the tour guide type of deal, but I'm not sure if they allow that there.

Just trying to iron out the basics at this point.

Have you done the overnight?

You want to fly into Pittsburg and drive down. It will be WAY cheaper than flying into Charleston and driving up. That's as close as you're going to get on commercial (I'm assuming you're not flying private, if you are PM me.). They do "photo tours" where you have chaperone and I think 3 hours to wonder somewhat wherever you want but they are pretty expensive.

I've been going up there since 2yrs after they closed the place and know the new owners very well. Message me if you have anymore questions.

Check out their website. What you want is the photography tour, down at the bottom of this page:

Looks like they've cut back on the number of buildings they allow you into, though. When I went a year ago, they let us into five buildings. Now it's down to three.

I almost sprung for the photography tour that they did there on November 3rd. You basically get access to the insides of all of the main buildings, but not the rest of the property, i.e. - the farm. There is a guide there to "supervise" you, but it is mostly to make sure that you know where the unsafe places are, etc. They only do this tour option a few times a year. When I spoke with the woman on the phone, she said that, for the most part, the buildings have not been changed too much, other than one section that they had restored to the style of the time period. She also said that most of the artifacts inside the place are no longer there. It sounds like a really neat place though. Maybe one day.....

I hope you have a lot of fun.

An asylum exploration is majorly on my bucket list. One can hope.

I went with a group of friends. We did the over night and it was…meh.
A lot of "ghosthunter" types waving EMF readers in every room. Kinda breaks the atmosphere.
Places like that need to be explored alone or in a small group. You can break off from the larger group at times, but you still hear the rumblings of others "making contact."
I wouldn't recommend the overnight, unless you're into "making contact."

Turd Ferguson - GREAT SNL name.

I did the private photo tour with four other photographers. If you have the dollars, it's well worth to have the entire place to yourself for a whole day. We had access to five different buildings and it takes about 5-6 hours to really see everything.

We drove up from NC and made it a 4 day trip during peak fall colors including Babcock State Park and a ton of rural exploration.

I just wanted to take the time to thank you all for your input and thank you Hootie for the sending me a message.

I really suck at keeping up with everyone here and there, but I do appreciate those who are kind enough to help.

Don't know if I'm going to make it this year yet.
Funds have unfortunately been TIGHT this year, so I'll see how it goes.

Sorry I took so long to reply back.

Thanks again everyone.

I haven't done it personally, but one of my friends said if he could do it again he would've flown into Pittsburgh and driven down.
