Next summer a friend and I are planning a 2-3 day trip to explore that town along with a couple other places around that area. Super excited!

Pretty cool town I have to say as well
Been there one time, in winter. I won't forget my snow shoe next time lol

Let me know if you want to make a trip! I'm planning on a Spring trip with snowshoes. Last time I made some with webbing and pine branches and it didn't work out so well.

It's best as a summer time camping spot. There is too much to see it all in a day anyhow.

I've written at length about this place; it's still one of my favorite spots in the state. I have to go camping again up there this summer. It is nice to see that it hasn't been more trashed than the last time I was up a few years ago. That graffiti in the skatepark looks pretty good, actually.

I'm planning on camping up there this summer too. There's actually quite a bit of graffiti that went up over the last year or so from the looks of it. I'll have to post pictures when I get an opportunity.

Viacom owns it. Big company. Probably will never clean it up. Tie it up in court for ever with attorneys and then do what Shattuck Chemical 1805 S. Bannock in Denver did (uranium for the first Soviet nuke bomb through lend lease - Before you hollar at me go read "From Major Jordans Diaries") Viacom will drag it out as long as they can (already been over 40 years) Then settle for less than cost. The taxpayers get stuck with the bill. Maybe plenty of time to still go see it.

Viacom hasn't owned it in thirty years. It's owned by Glen T. Miller dba Miller Enterprises. The EPA won't let 'em build there because there's still too much Arsenic in the ground and the mine is still contaminating the river. But yes, it will probably be dragged out for many a year. Look at the Southeast corner of Alameda and Santa Fe. Been a fenced off field since they tore down the radium factory eighty years ago. Until some entity like Six Flags with millions to pour into a half-assed cleanup comes along, it will remain so. I don't think anybody's too interested in cleaning up the Eagle mine.

I am planning a week long crescent drive from Dallas through AZ, NM into eastern CA and then back up through NV, UT and finally CO. I'd love to hit this place when in the area.

Couple of questions, feel free to PM me the details for security reasons:

1. What's the location so I can see if we'll be able to make it work

2. How'll the terrain be in Mid-March

3. Gear/Security/Access concerns?

Any info would be great...as well as other suggestions for the Southwest. Definitely going to be doing some cruising on Route 66

There will be a lot of snow there still in mid march. PM if you want some details.
