I've been fairly lucky thus far, but I do have a scar on my arm from this one time I thought it would be a good idea to climb a chain link fence in combat boots. I fell off but the strap of my overalls got caught on the fence and when i fell it was seven feet down onto super sharp rocks.

I (and a few other good UER members) treated a full femur break during a 40-60ft rappelling fall here:

dropped a manhole on my hand once.

.... actually, twice.

I shredded my lower leg up pretty good on a piece of sharp metal jutting out of a telephone pole or something one night. I had to sprint for cover into the dark behind the pole when a sketchy car was driving past. At least I'm pretty sure that's what did it; I didn't notice the cut until later, when for some reason I touched my pant leg and discovered that it was dripping blood onto the ground. Good thing I had my handy dandy Neosporin and bandages in my FAK with me. Luckily that's the only real injury I've sustained while exploring.

Either getting a nail through the boot or slipping while climbing over a metal book shelf in a hallway and bouncing my head off the wall really hard.

Was exploring an old missile silo.

We were heading for the door with our flashlights off. Stupid mistake.

I forgot about the 6ft hole in the floor on my way out. Fell right in. Other than being scared shitless, I only got banged up a little bit.

Apart from cranes, I seem to have done most stuff with a heavy camera strapped around my neck, and the worst I've done was a hyper-extension to my ankle following a mis-timed jump (Gunkan Apato Osaka).

It's been said many, many times before - prepare properly, know your risks and manage them appropriately. Being heavily safety trained & prepared for many years helps I know, so a few have an advantage there. But, the bottom line is if you do not know, do not take the risk. Which is of course the conundrum - how can you know what will kill you, without being told? What gas? What flaky steel? What glass roof? What sharp nail?

The easy answer is of course, the smart person makes the decision to not expose themselves, and the stupid person makes the decision to proceed and die.

Side-bar: In thinking about safety training, the only thing I've never really used exploring is my HUET. Anyone else similarly equipped with real world safety training? I love stories about sub-mariner evacuations. See ya! Neko.

Nothing major, stepped on a nail once. It sucked. A friend of mine (an un-named board member), fell flat from 12 feet up onto boxes of old dishware. It did'nt even take the wind out of him, but it was concerning in the moment.

I have to amend what I said when I first posted this thread.

I just got back from an abandoned grain-making building. It was crumbling into this disgusting body of water and we climbed in from the rocks beneath a decaying stairway (literally the only POE). I slashed my leg on a rusty piece of metal jutting out of the wall, and later regretted it when I found myself semi-submerged in water that is considered incredibly toxic by the EPA...yikes.

I then had to get out and drive home changing gears with a hand that was worse than useless

I broke three bones in my foot, (2nd, 3rd, 4th metatarsal) up the Worcester State Hospital Clocktower a few years back.
That pesky board that fell off the window on the right hand side was not visible through the snow in February, so I slipped and my foot went sideways and cracked em all.

Thankfully I was with my buddy who was a Marine and a strong dude, so he helped me wobble back out and over/under the fences.


YES.....alcohol was heavily involved.
We actually brought a shit ton of Beer and just sat on the front stairs of the Administration Cloctower and drank our asses off like we fucking owned the place.

(sidenote.....we were already drunk before we even got there to boot).

Around 10yrs ago, this is my friend after he fell in a mine/cave we were exploring in. Back before we had rappelling gear.
He has no recollection of this event.

I totes slipped on a huge mound of ice a few years ago and bruised my butt up so bad. I could not sit on it for ages.
