Two heads are usually better than one in crisis situations. Not a chance in hell I'd explore alone when considering the risk involved

I explore alone sometimes in rural and urban places. Sometimes one person is just less conspicuous than two if you are trying to get into a high risk place.

The hood can be a bit unnerving.

most have my explores have been alone...apparently i have jumpy friends hahaha

It depends on where I am exploring at. My city is the 4th most violent in the US so when I am there in Cleveland never alone. Going to hit Detroit soon and that is number one for violence in the US, so we go with a group.

I always tell myself I won't go alone. This is what usually happens.

Just driving around minding my own business. Oh that looks like it could be a cool spot. I'll just walk around it and see if I can find a POE. If I do I'll go get some friends and come back later. Oh there's a wide open window. Well it won't hurt if I just step in and take a peek. 3 hours later I'm still exploring the site, all alone.

Also, I haven't posted on here in forever.

I do every single one of my location adventures on my own; whether at 3 in the afternoon or at 3 in the morning. Working with someone elses time-frame or paranoia/fears just wouldn't work for me. I move faster, stay longer, leave sooner, get into creepier places, etc. without having to worry about what someone else wants to do or not do.

The only problem with the way I work is that I don't have a cellphone (ya, Rogers is still trying to hunt me down). So if I go down at a location then I have no way to call for help and no one is able to get in touch with me if I don't show up for dinner. I don't worry too much about this part of it but my wife (we're separated) and my mom have expressed the usual "safety" concerns.

But everyone rolls differently and either way of exploring is as good as the other.

Christ, I know exactly what you mean. I don't have any problems with the idea of doing urbex alone but it would be impossible for me to get anything done. I've been in some really spooky places that were hard for me to press on through in a group, can't even imagine trying to explore those places alone.

The first place I ever did urbex was a parking garage scheduled for demolition. It had been fenced off (although with some obvious gaping holes) but for the most part it was in a lively and active part of the city. Even past midnight the whole place was pretty much visible just from all the light pollution the rest of the city gave off. Definitely the most tame place I've ever gone. Even still, I wouldn't have been able to do it alone. The place was covered in broken glass, empty bottles, piles of clothes and dirty mattresses. It was pretty obvious people were still coming and going even though it was going to be gone within the month. We did end up stumbling on one hobo in the stairwell, and that alone was enough to make me want to call it a day. Was not at all interested in meeting anyone much less friendly than he was.

I usually solo. Its usually spur of the moment.
Its definitely got its ups and down going solo.
I only worry about my ability to get in and out of tight spaces. I spend more time in peace when alone. Mainly I"m only liable for myself.

Going with more then one is nice cause it's always nice to have someone watch your back and another set of eyes. Its also nice to have someone in those dark creepy moments.

However when I go alone. I always have minimum 2 flashlight ( not including cell phone flashlight apps ). I usually carry 3. A good charge on cell phone ( for emergency and to use GPS to help locate if needed )
And when in doubt, don't push it. Use common sense. I"ve backed out of countless of attempt just cause it was iffy and I know if it goes wrong, I have no one to help me out other then rescue. ( providing my phone still works then and not interested to be in the headline for being rescued )

As I have taken a new job driving tractor trailer, I have been exploring alone more. I have realized my limits and what I can get away with. I always am aware of my surroundings and never venture to the second floor. And I do have a 60 foot plus truck so hiding it and going beyond the signs is hard.. but nothing is impossible.

I used to go alone all the time until I found a group to explore with. When I told the women of the group I explored by myself, they quickly availed me of the dire consequences of doing so. As a female, I worry about getting robbed (even though my gear is insured) and I worry about getting raped.

Exploring with a group can be a pain in the ass sometimes with people walking into your shots and such but it's not a race, I can always wait until they walk out of the shot or I can yell out them to move the hell out of the way. Plus, if I fall through a floor or something, I know someone is there to claim the body.

I know that I'm only stating the obvious, but I think it's worth saying that solo exploring is not an "all or nothing" deal.

Finding yourself without an exploring partner means you have the opportunity to head out to scout future locations. Take some external photos for future reference. Look for obvious points of entry and whether there appears to be a regular security presence. Having a few locations identified gives you alternatives in case you get to your primary exploring location and find that, for whatever reason, you can't explore that site that day.

For the mine exploring that we do, we often look through maps and databases, then spend the day just driving from one site to the next. We will take basic gear along just to see if a given adit goes anywhere, but the goal is to find future exploring possibilities. We usually have a few locations just waiting their turn to be explored.

That's pretty much a requirement for me. I know one explorer near me that has a schedule like mine, so I usually go out alone. Plus, when sites are a couple hours out, I hate taking folks for a drive only to be disappointed. That happened the other day, and I felt like a jerk.

yup. pretty much.

It was a bit of a problem when I was driving across the country, and I had to trust my gut and say no to a few "open windows." It was difficult.

That being said, I feel a lot better if I have someone I trust with me.
