Titan Missile Silos and Site Safety
entry by autowitch

Ok, so I hate to start my journal with a rant, but here I go.

Over in the Colorado area, there was a picture of an explorer climbing around in a Titan 1 launch silo.

This particular bit of climbing was on rather dodgy pipes directly over the launch silo, which itself is filled with over 100 feet of really, really contaminated water, bits of rusty metal and god knows what else.

The Captain and I took a look at this picture and commented to ourselves on that being a really bad idea. And then we went back to looking at the water (for reasons that will make up a whole other journal entry).

Chainsaw has pointed out exactly why this climbing around is really a bad idea. I want to reiterate it since it applies to other sites as well. The site is in pretty bad shape and the pipes the explorer was climbing on were marginal at best. There is a good chance that the explorer could have met with a pretty nasty accident requiring rescue workers to risk their lives to save him. This is what makes doing things like this a really bad idea. Doing stupid things does not just involve you - it puts other peoples live's at risk and that's seriously lame.

This is not to say not to explore these sites. The Titan sites are one of the best sites in Colorado and well worth exploring. And it's pretty easy to get caught up in the passion of the moment - just don't be stupid.

Yea I agree completely. Luckily nothing happened, but I probably should have been more assertive rather than simply stating that he had better be extremely careful and that there was no way in hell I was following him. I really didn't want to undermime him since he is almost 4 years older than me and has quite a bit of exploring under his belt. As a side note, I did mock him pretty heavily for wearing shorts.

Edit: I'd also like to point out that, although bold, he's a great guy and I'd trust him on any future explorations.

I can understand that problem. I tend to not be an assertive person in general... Mocking is a good thing though

I'd explore with him too. I was hoping to do so when he was here - if he heads back this way I hope to.
