Bountiful Prairie Ghost Town

I think I could spend years documenting ghost towns in this province. The first time I visited this town in 2009 it was officially a ghost town. It was winter and all the streets where snowed in, the few street lights were dark, and there wasn’t a single person living in the town. The remains at the time were approx 10 houses, a church, a rink and a movie theatre that was a hall in its later years – all recently boarded up by the Rural Municipality after the last few remaining residents were forced out. The buildings had been declared unsanitary and unfit for human occupation by the Ministry of Health after the water and sewer system for the hamlet had failed.

It wasn’t always that way – a century ago the village had 200 residents, a hotel, two banks, three grain elevators, and its own newspaper. There were a total of nineteen businesses. The years since have been tough on this town, the story is similar to the demise of hundreds of communities like this one in Saskatchewan. The boom of the 1920’s fed all these communities and they all grew. The prosperity of the time looked like it was never going to end. However the depression years of the 1930’s spelled drought and hardship and these small communities began to wither. As time passed more businesses closed and one of the final blows to many communities is when the railways abandoned their small branch lines in the 1980’s as the government stopped subsidizing them. The railways were responsible for the start and growth of these communities was also responsible for their final demise.

These photos are from the fall of 2011 and something interesting is happening in this town. There are a few houses that were sold and were being repaired. I thought many of them appeared to be beyond repair, but apparently there are some that believe otherwise. So this little town that boomed and then died out completely appears to have a little life again. We will see if this generation of settlers remain or if they will give up and leave like so many before them.

Vandals have for the most part have yet to find this location. I hope it stays that way.

I was recently in Bounty and it does seem that one house in the town has been fixed up and appears to have someone living in it.

Although this place isn't exactly a secret you should notice that I never said the real name of the place for a reason. Please don't name drop again.

If the place isn't a secret, why keep the name private?

Why give it more exposure than it already has? Why contribute to its further destruction? It doesn't mean I won't help an explorer find something however I don't put real names on public sources as it will be another town that gets vandalized to the point where the municipality comes in and bulldozes the whole town - I have seen it many times.

Vandal's love destroying desolate old towns in this province.

You have to remember that this is a public forum.
If you're so worried about your favorite location(s) being destroyed, vandalized or demolished you're better off making your thread private, and available only to full members.

Besides, Your post header was a total hint to the name of the location. just by searching, I found it.

True and I don't care that much about this place. If I did I wouldn't have made it so easy. Besides I was just giving a pointer that name dropping will equal a negative experience on UER.

I create public threads of places I don't want to expose all the time but I don't make it very easy to identify the true location. Most seasoned explorers know that if they recognize the place to not name drop it.

Uh, no. And from years of posting galleries with names here, and writing elsewhere that has "name dropped," that has not been the experience.

To the OP: I love these threads of ghost communities. Keep up the good work. When I am out that way for work next year, I'd like to pay the town (and others) a visit. Thanks!

I will give you that Seicer - you generally post locations and there is no trouble. I have seen many people on here get torn apart for name dropping.

Maybe I am just paranoid however 8 years ago I posted some photos of a location that was immediately trashed and vandalized, and one building burnt to the ground. The place was locked down tight and it took 4 years before I could get into the place again. Maybe that had nothing to do with me, or maybe it did, I will never know for sure.

There are plenty of ghost towns in Saskatchewan that received far too much publicity and they were quickly ruined. The pickers and vandals show up and destroy the places. I know people still know about these places and ultimately we are just delaying the inevitable by hiding the true identities of these locations. I know of a mine that has never been exposed on the web and it took close to a decade but it too is getting destroyed however even to this day there are no photos on the web that I have ever found of it. I have shared a few but not gave away what it is or where it is, but for now I sit on my photos and write ups until I feel it is safe to share them.

I felt absolutely horrible knowing that my actions may have led to the destruction of a place I loved and I decided to never risk another location like that again. Call it what you will but that is the way it is for me. Almost everything I explore I find on my own. I spend countless hours studying maps looking for possible locations.

I appreciate the feedback and I will continue to post locations like this. If you are ever up this way Seicer let me know and I would love to meet up and explore.

Thanks I think it depends on how much potential there is to be scrapped in such a place. A ghost town is probably on the low-key list of places in comparison to some of the blown out industries in Cleveland, Ohio that were scrapped and raped years before UER existed.

There was one that I was cautious about for a while due to security (military site) and my legal access, but I weighed the potential for trespassers and scrappers versus the need-to-know and the logistics of trying to write something and source it without having to disclose where it was at. My initial cloaking efforts were okay, but it made for difficult reading, and made citing sources next to impossible.

Didn't even think about the whole name of the place thing. sorry. I love this place and if I could find out who owns the house with the wrap around porch I would buy it. I am a person who would love to buy homes in these run down places and fix them up and get people back into the community. My parents used to spend many weekends in this town when they were younger and the town was thriving. Here are some pictures that I took on my trip. The old theater was recently purchased by a nearby town to be restored and moved to the towns museum.

old school house. Used to be two school houses connected by a tunnel.

Old house that looks nice

House in the progress of being cleaned up and being repaired.

I love the lettering on the $50 fine sign. I was working on lettering for awhile but never got very good at it so bailed but always appreciate good signs.

This is very cool. You said there are a lot of ghost towns like this scattered across the north of Canada? I've never been up there, but I'm thinking about making a road trip some time in the next few years.

Ok so I have to do everyone a favour with an update on the status of this town .

I Met one of the towns resident who lives on the farm a mile over . His family still own the house on the north end of town with 2 garages which turns out to be the old town railway station before it was converted to his home. He is spending a lot of time and money bringing his part of the town back to life . He was very friendly and gave us a bit of a history lesson.

The Church on the south end was purchased a couple generations ago the current owners father was the towns dentist and used the church as his surgery. This explains the xray equipment and lots of dental notes. The current owner the son of the dentist was in a bad accident and suffered brain damage.

The farmer speaks proudly of the dances and festivals that the town used to hold and says people came from miles away . The hotel has been moved many years ago and the theatre is still to be moved to Outlook as it is of large historical importance it was built in the early 1900's .

Many of the homes are still owned by the original owners . He hints that the one with fire damage the owner owes back taxes proving the collapse of a town doesn't stop your taxes. Several other people are slowly rebuilding in town.

His hope seems to build a community that is quite and truly brings the rural lifestyle back and keep this former ghost town on the map for generations to come.

THE TOWNS MAIN ISSUE IS VANDALISM THESE HOMES THAT APPEAR ABANDONED MAY NOT BE SO BE CAREFUL HE ALSO HINTS AT CAMERAS SET UP THROUGHOUT THE TOWN . BE RESPECTFUL!
