OK. So I think I'll try the journal thing (I'll be posting my adventures as well as the people I wander with
).
Latest Wanderings The Tank & Boiler Company (this is a very loose collection of explorers, artists, burners...) has been a bit busy lately. This last weekend we spent some time scouting. There's been quite a bit of discussion lately about the missile silos that Subciety has traced down. We located several silos and went out to scout three (two Titans and one Atlas-E). As expected, one of the Titan sites was amazingly open - no fences, no signs. It was very, very cool. The other has been recycled into a trash compactor. It was high on a ridge and there was a pretty severe lightning storm going on. I didn't proceed further
. The Atlas-E site is currently used for document storage - but it looks like we will be able to get a tour of it. This site is supposed to be in very good condition.
In the process of chasing down the silos, we also took a peek at the Great Western sugar mills in Eaton (very, very nice) and Greely (active, but random people looking at the equipment on the property). Another significant building was found.
Research In progress I am still investigating the historic tunnels underneath downtown C-Springs. There's a lot of rumors of an "underground railway" connecting the two railroad stations. If this exists, I would really like to find it.
At this point, I've looked down a lot of manholes and wandered up a lot of tunnels. So far, I've seen historic tunnels, but not been able to get into them. The latest trip was into an incredibly nasty, dirty, foul smelling tunnel (Monument Creek #2) - so far, this tunnel appears to only drain the insterstate, but there are a couple of side tunnels that still need to be verified. I'm not looking forward to this.
An empty neighborhood was recently found. This neighborhood will most likely be destroyed in the near future (which is a shame, it looks like there is some interesting old houses here). I don't know if they are going to attempt to move the buildings to another location (which sometimes happens here when a neighborhood is destroyed) or if they will be bulldozed. On the west side, another endangered building is also in desperate need of being recorded.
The HR/Admin(?) building for Current appears to be empty and not maintained. Another empty building (usage unknown) has also been found. These are both examples of 80's architecture (the Current building is kind of bizarre) and as such, not quite as interesting to me as the older buildings. At this point, these haven't been investigated, but I hope to look at them once I get through my backlog.
Other stuff I was happy to learn that two abandoned gilsonite (it's safe to use!) mining towns that were believed to have been destroyed by arson are still intact. The PT&B Co needs make a trip to photograph these sites later in the year.
