Britannia Mine is an abandoned copper mine on the east side of Howe Sound, near Squamish. At the height of its production, it was the largest copper mine in the British Commonwealth. It operated from 1902 to 1974, and was shut down due to the excessive pollution that it generated. The area is huge, and it took a long hike and overnight stay in order to have the time to see a fraction of the ruins scattered throughout the thick temperate rainforests around Mount Sheer.

The journey along the way is often as important as the destination.

Very cool. Did all those wooden trays hold core samples to help find ore? The zig zags are wild looking with the moss on top.

Whoa, those core samples are unreal. Esp. the portrait.

I love lush, mountain mines like this. I saw one on Mt. Baldy in NM when I was a camera-less 14 year old that I have lustily dreamed of ever since. Gotta watch your step though

Nice photos, especially that one of your friend in the tram building. I remember the trip up to the ruined powerhouse to be easy, but never went further up into the rest. Check your PM's...

IIRC the massive yawning portal your friend is standing in was a Dynamite bunker. Britannia is a pretty amazing place, pity the yahoos have been more and more active up there in recent years.

Little note: the "generators" aren't generators, but are rather, very large air compressors. The easy way to ID them is the inter/after cooler fitted above them, with the tubes in it.
