Do you know how many artifacts are left over from Lennox Castle hospital ?
A museam had an appeal a year or two ago to find some for a display... No joy.
Now, want to know something ? I gave them a laundry basket with the Lennox Logo on it.
Know why ? Because I took it last time I was there - and saved it from the bulldozer and the skip.
So in fact I preserved a piece of history.
You're right...everyone's rules may vary. And it would be an exercise in futility to sway one or another. This topic's been covered time and again in many threads here.
When you take something from a location with the intention of preserving it as an artifact, you've essentially become somewhat of a 'historian' rather than just an explorer who leaves only footprints. In my mind, the two are mutually exclusive.
I go to places to explore, photograph and document what exists at the moment I discover it. Not with a specimen bag to drop items in to.
If genuine, certified historians want to preserve artifacts from a site, they should obtain permission to retrieve them before demolition. I don't call wandering in to a place and plucking out items "preservation of history".
There is no land or buildings in the public domain (at least that I know of). Somewhere...somebody owns the property. Any property in Canada that's not owned by private individuals or companies is deemed 'Crown land'. Therefore the items contained on that property technically belong to the land owner, even if they aren't secured by locks, fences or whatnot.
Anyways, I'm not arguing the point. Just stating a personal opinion here. You do what you do...and I do what I do. I'm merely elaborating on the way I view it all.
The theme song in my head would run the line, "Let it be..."
You can always tell when you're watching Canadian television - the actors in the show are the same ones doing the commercials.
