Watching an episode of Supernatural right now and they're at a mental institution. It's amazing how much it reminds me of the ORC. The dark rooms, filled with abandoned medical equipment... Spooky to say the least!

I had the "pleasure" of working there one summer in the early 90s. The place was still in use, although the number of residents living there obviously wasn't what it had been years earlier. The duties of my job required me to go from top to bottom of every single square inch of the building. There wasn't a room I didn't go in, no matter what it was, how dangerous it was, who was in there (patient or staff), you name it. Some of the rooms were fairly boring - believe it or not the patient rooms were for the most part pretty routine - but others were fascinating. I just wish I had had a camera to document some of what I saw.

I'm totally new here, so I won't bore everyone, but if there is any interest in hearing more, drop me a line or post here and I'll gladly provide more history.

Ed, I'd love to hear any information or stories you have!

I live beside the complex, yet it's amazing how much is 'unknown' about the place.

Baby like the way I wake her up, 'Cause I'm a gangsta, I grab her by the butt, Pull her to my side, I'm in deep, Woke that ass up just to put her to sleep

I'll break the first rule of story-telling and tell one of the weirdest stories right off the bat.

I don't see any photos of the building, but one of the buildings on the grounds was for teen males with behaviour problems. Don't quote me on this, but I got the impression they had been put there by court order. It was a pretty secure facility and it was a little intimidating.

Most of the rooms were pretty boring, but one room stands out. It's what I think of as "A Clockwork Orange" room. It was a room divided in two (each about 10'x15') by a wall with a door. The wall had a two-way mirror. The first room (which could be viewed) was mostly taken up by a lazy-boy recliner with a screen on the wall. The other room had a slide projector on a table.

My curiosity got the better of me and I looked at some of the slides. To say it was shocking is an understatement. Some slides were boring, like pictures of trees or cars or people in every day situations, but other pictures were of nude men, women, boys or girls. Some of the subjects were very young - definitely a pedophile's dream.

Even more interesting was a device that from what I could tell was able to indicate the state of arousal of the male watching. It was basically a free-floating bar that pivoted up or down depending.

So as far as I could tell, the room was used to show slides to the patients to determine what they found arousing and then I assume some sort of therapy was instituted.

Maybe you had to be there, but given the setting, and the atmosphere of the place it was too bizarre!

More stories to follow...

Yes. The mess hall is still there. It is abandoned and easily accessible.
