I actually lived a block away from the place that caught on fire, it was so hot it blew out the windows across the street. I always wondered what that place was, thanks for the info!

Sadly, like the plants, my old apartment building got torn down for condoes too. St. Henri is slowly disappearing under a carpet of "freehold townhomes" and "deluxe lofts".

I have only one pics of there, i'll post it soon.

"freehold townhomes" I anticipating those new reprt about how bad/cheap the condo were built... leaking roof, rotting concrete in the basement, water noise, leaking windows.....etc. in 5-10 years. We will see that in "JE" or "La Facture" on TV.

One of the new sets of buildings down by Atwater & Notre Dame had an entire brick wall fall off in the spring. It was kind of funny, but also kind of sad - how long did those old warehouses stand and these new trendy condoes can't even last through 2 winters? I'm glad to see that the economy has picked up, but the lack of craftsmanship in new home construction is almost scary. I wonder where my kids will be able to go check out abandoned buildings if the new ones fall down too fast.

It wasnt a garbage dump on the Verdun proper side! All landfill from the dyke built after the great flood in 1895.
Nun's Island side was partial garbage fill.

charlie, i have pictures taken by my father when he was a member of the verdun yacht club, in the 60s they filled from the present boardwalk to the present shoreline with garbage, the verdun stadium was built on top of garbage, when they were building brises du fleuve 6 years ago you could see the trash, the fill went from the auditorium all the way to the greenhouses. you can see the dyke behind the mc donalds, but between the dyke and the river is all trash.

I can remember them filling parts of it when I was a kid and, well, it seems to me it was like 90% dirt! But I don t recall what got dumped by the boat club ( you are talking about the one near Desmarchais, right?). So I will assume that the boat clubs at the river had to relocate during that filling in process?

In any case what bothered me about the Verdun waterfront is that way back when Mayor Wilson vowed that they would never build on the river. For a lot of people that also could mean that stadiums and auditoriums and swimming pools and boat clubs were reasonable and quasi public exceptions.

In the late 60's we saw the first Manoir get built and combined with the sudden rapid rate of development on Nun's Island ( a virtual paradise for migrating waterfowl and one of the most "important" ecological locations in the area) the writing was on the wall. Or should I say "behind the stadium with you" (old Verdun joke).

but remember in the 80s the hydro project they wanted to build, it would have flooded large tracts of the south shore, mostly kahnawake but since the island in that area is 50 feet higher than the river there would have been no problem there
