Maybe the price they could get for the material they were digging out dropped to low to make it profitable, or the company went bankrupt.

Hanson still owns a huge quarry about 2 miles East, down the road.

So they definitely didn't go bankrupt. I am 99% sure Hanson owns this abandoned property.
