Did you lie? Is that social engineering in your opinion? This is an ethics poll not interested in your stories about latest greatest explores, just a barometer of how the so called community feels about deceiving somebody to gain access to something with "permission".

Where do you personally draw the line? Are you making up stories about being a struggling student that needs bando pics for their term paper? Are you a commercial photographer selling photos or posting live action videos of peeling paint for likes by the yuppies that don't explore?

Flame away! But at least answer the poll.

My last real exploration was a small church, which I did after first talking to the former congregants and gaining their approval. I told them that I was doing a photographic survey of historic churches in the area (technically true, although I'm really only interested in the abandoned ones), and that I was a volunteer with my local historical society (which isn't true, but only because I just moved here and haven't had time to get in touch with that organization yet). I don't consider it at all unethical to distort the truth in this way to make myself sound a little bit more "respectable", as long as I'm not disguising my true intention, which in any case is to take pictures of a building I find aesthetically and historically interesting in a way that's respectful to the building and the people who care for it. In the case of the church, I probably didn't even need to pad my credentials like I did; they were just happy that someone else was interested in a place that meant a great deal to them as a community, and had been shut down despite their objections.

Why lie when the truth would serve you better?
This axiom has served me well.
It has gotten me repeat invites from demo contrators to places I otherwise never would have witnessed.

In those instances when I end up having to explain myself, I just go with the truth...while being direct has mixed results, most of the time it ends well, even if that amounts to being told to leave...
Seeking permission tends to (in my experience at least) create a wall of convoluted bureaucracy (as if there's any other kind) that ends in exposing my intentions and eliciting a 'no', when the simpler solution ends with a successful explore that nobody likely knew occurred in the first place.
Nothing wrong with seeking permission, and in that effort, I would also agree with sticking to the truth.
I guess if/when people are that curious about why I do what I do...I just say it's my way of dealing with my abandonment issues...😜

Wait, what? "Do you lie to people explore?" - no, I don't people explore, whatever that is. ...?

I feel like I seriously missed something here.

In the same boat lol

I just tell people I’m a cop and tell them I just want to shoot their abandoned building. Works most of the time when I go the permission route.

My approach is to ask around. There are a ton of rumors that some of the buildings in Tonopah were connected to some of the mine drifts. Certainly not unlikely considering that the town is built over the top of many of the mines. We would love to find our way into those mines.

I chat up locals to see if anyone has ever actually been in any of them. I did get shown a bricked up doorway in a basement that was said to connect. I've talked to construction guys down in hole fixing a sewer pipe. I'll strike up a conversation with anyone that I think might have information. My friends just shake their heads, but sometimes it works.

I always tell the truth because well...it's the best reason you can have anyway ahah

What can you tell better than you are here by interest and passion about history to document thoses places?

In some rare occasion i will use social engineering and make up a story, specially for places like active and under construction sites.

Trespassing is not just a violation of an individual's legal contract with society (i.e. to obey all relevant laws), but a violation of the social contract with his fellow humans in the society that they share (i.e. mutual respect of property rights).

IMO, misrepresenting for the purpose to gain access to a location otherwise off-limits is a considerably lesser violation of the social contract, reflected by the fact that unless under oath, lying is not a violation of one's legal contract with society.

To pretend that lying is somehow more-sneaky than simple trespassing requires one to delude oneself into thinking that the owners really intend that unauthorized access to be acceptable and no violation of the social contract as long as they're not capably thwarting it.

In reality, it's simply that one does not have the stomach to violate another human's trust in their face.

Contract with society? I don't have one. But Ok, see how it holds up in court.

This is the kind of comment I anticipated. Lying to get in some location is actually a lot LESS "sneaky" than just good old honest sneaking in.

In my opinion its a lot less fun too! Violating some imaginary contract with society or, your state's penal code is much less dishonest than lying to someone.

There is a thing with words like this

You hear it
You hate it
You mock it
You use it in sentences jokingly
You use is in more sentences jokingly
It becomes a natural part of your vocabulary without even realizing it

That is what has happened with the word bando!!

Sigh, he's right.

And yeah lie, do whatever it takes. My $.02 is "fuck the entire ownership class" We aren't talking about people's homes, here. These are mostly industrial and commercial facilities left to rot after the ownership class "business geniuses" failed to keep their little engine of commerce running and their workers paid the harder price. Fuck 'em.
