Having done several schools, houses, churches, factories, a mall and my first coal-fired power plant this year, I was nevertheless craving a more classic type of location for this weekend after Halloween - an asylum. This place has a reputation as being one of the more well-secured examples in the region, but I didn't really see why. The only thing that kept me from checking out more than a single building was the flooding of the tunnels, which are the best way to move around the campus. Buildings here are apparently being slowly demolished so the university next door can expand, but there was no sign of activity at all on this beautiful fall morning. This particular building has been shown here a number of times before, and I know I'm not breaking any new ground with my shots of it, but it is unbelievably photogenic and doesn't appear to have suffered too much degradation from the last shots I saw, more than a year ago.

So many lonely wheelchairs (and that peely paint we love so much)!! Gorgeous shots, love an awesome asylum explore. That first pic teased me for a sec...while focusing on the chair, I assumed I was looking outside through broken windows at first, then saw the details of the paintings (plus I just woke up as I was looking at new threads). Thanks for sharing!

Excellent work!! This was one of my favorite places to visit and you've captured this building very well. I believe that the University has demolished everything that they plan to at this point. The campus was almost double in size before. I read that the buildings left standing are historically protected, but we all know how that goes.

nice, you got some good shots of this place. I really wish I had shot more of it as I only made it there once.

Many thanks, everyone!

After my first visit here, I was shown a set of photos from another building on the campus, and my jaw just about fell through the floor. I slacked off last weekend, but yesterday I made the trek back down. The atmosphere couldn't have been more different; while two weeks ago was brisk, sunny and featured great fall colors as a backdrop, yesterday was cold, gloomy, drizzly and bleak. The perfect setting, in other words, for a place like this.

Interestingly, this building provided a much better vantage point to see the rest of this half of the campus, and I couldn't see any signs of the demolition I've heard so much about. I also once again saw no sign of security, but I did notice several regular cars driving around at points, possibly full of curiosity seekers. This stands in stark contrast to a lot of what I've heard about this place.

One last note: I also gave the tunnels here a try, and they were without a doubt the worst I've encountered as an explorer so far. They were all of four and a half or five feet tall, and about three feet wide, half of which was taken up by a large pipe shedding its asbestos cladding. I made it maybe 200 feet in, stooped over and barely able to see despite my flashlight, before I started hyperventilating into my mask and had to turn around and get back to fresh air. To those of you who've successfully navigated them, my hat is off to you.

Awesome shots, thanks for sharing! Love the color and natural decay. I think #1 and 7 (and #2 from your second set) are my favorites.
