In 1935 Åke Danielsson, based in the village Ryd, bought a piece of land to mine peat. As demand for peat rose, Danielsson began remodeling old car engines for a peat shredder. After the Second World War, the number of cars in Sweden increased. Old cars were disposed in the forest. Danielsson began to collect the vehicles and sell the usable parts, so that the business with spare parts soon became more profitable than peat mining. In 1974, the last vehicle was turned off. Despite the careful removal of batteries, fuel and oils, the local authorities decided to clear the site of all scrap until November 1998 due to the threat of soil contamination. As the press reported it to almost the entire country, voices of Danielsson's supporters were louder, including numerous journalists, photographers and museum staff. Finally, a permit was granted that allowed Danielsson to use the site for another 49 years as a junkyard. Åke Danielsson died in 2000.
