I don't know if this'll get a lot of replies, as its a weird topic, but what was the most interesting/best excuse you've given someone for exploring a place, or just in general. For me, it was simply,"It looks cool." when I was caught by a very angry neighbor.

I'm here for a good time not a long time.

I just don't get caught.

But I always have an excuse ready, just depends on the area and location.

I once was caught in an abandoned red-light district and said I was there looking for stray cats. The security guard then took me on a tour of the area introducing me to the stray cat population and how he was feeding them and providing cat shelters.

"Hi, could you point me towards the restroom? I'm a bit lost."

Works better when infiltrating active locations than it does in abandoned factories.

I got into a shouting match from the roof of a 4-story school with a neighbor standing in his yard down below. I just remember shouting "I'm allowed to be here!" as if that helped at all.

It probably helped that I was actually allowed to be there with permission from the town, but I often think back on how ridiculous it was.

A security guard saw our vehicle (parked legally), and was so sure he knew where we were going to pop out at and was so sure he knew when (sun was getting close to going down). There was only one way out (-ish), and after we saw his vehicle parked at our property exit, we google earthed a new plan. We had to do some backtracking a good ways until we found a part of fence that we could slide under and then walked the highway back to the car.
We got back just as he had redriven the strip (a few times from what we heard) that led to the exit. As he rolled up on me, back turned, I noticed a deer about 50yds away and just started snapping photos and advancing towards the deer, away from the car and the guard.
He hollered out, "What do you think you're doing?" and I acted like I never saw him and just kept shouting, "Look a deer!" I walked over to the guard after he shouted again, so excited about that deer and went into my southern ramble about how big it was, we call those a 12 point, but I'm not sure how you boys do it up this way, probably call it a 6 point, etc, etc. We were covered in mud from sliding under the fence and even though he'd been waiting for this moment most of the day, there was nothing he could do this side of the fence. He kept interrupting my deer talk and finally yelled out, you can't be here, why are you here? My buddy says, "Wildlife photography, of course." He was upset it didn't go the way he wanted and that this southern imbecile wouldn't shutup about a single deer. He finally just shouted, get back in your vehicle and never come back, and off we went.

Some number of years ago, the first time (and last time) that I tried to infiltrate the Queen of Sidney, I wasn't very subtle about it. I turned onto the road in my noisy old pickup, drove right past multiple large spray painted No Trespassing signs and onto the property. I was immediately followed in by two thoroughly pissed off neighbors in a huge Dodge dually. Not having an excuse prepared I was forced to think fast so I slammed on the brakes, ran up to a bush, unzipped my pants, and started taking a leak. My pursuers yelled "What the fuck do you think you're doing here!?" and I responded "Sorry guys! I was on the highway home and couldn't hold it any longer!".

Piss poor excuse considering there were plenty of decent spots to stop for a leak between the highway and the Queen, but it was enough to get me out of there with all of my teeth in tact.

Still really looking forward to spending some time with the Queen in the future but it's going to take a while before I rekindle the balls to try again.

Did he also tell the deer not to come back?

Explored a large nursing home back at the beginning of this year, one that the residents of the neighbouring properties - which literally sit almost on top of it they are that close - are shit hot on keeping people out of. We got in through a small hole in a door around the back, and we knew the front door was able to be opened from the inside so we had our easy way out planned.

An hour or so into the explore we noticed two locals standing at the rear of the building, one of which was on the phone and the other kept pacing up and down the length of the building. Our gut instincts all told us she was on the phone to the police so we decided to just carry on and do as much as we could whilst keeping a cautious eye out the windows at the front and back. After about 15 minutes we realised that the police had pulled up outside and the guy who was pacing up and down was now stood directly in front of the way we'd gotten in. Never worry we thought as we knew we could just go out the front door! At this point we knew we were going to be caught so decided to get our excuses and story in order before facing whatever the police had to say. Bold as brass we walked out the door right in front of three police cars and a local resident (who was pretty cool actually), and after some slightly less cool locals demanded to know how we got in as they said we'd ripped a board off, we said our friends had let us in through the front door before they left at some point - and then when the police asked us to show them how, we feigned disbelief that the door was only able to be opened from inside as we tried to demonstrate our 'entry' to them.

After a few more questions and after they ran our details and searched us etc (all standard stuff), we were free to go. It kind of helped that one of the officers was genuinely interested in the sort of stuff we do, we were telling him all sorts of stories of places we'd been etc whilst they were running our details through the systems.

Good times!

I once got caught by security with a buddy while doing some practice rappelling from some rafters of an abandoned warehouse in Toronto. We said we were "urban explorers" and "just taking some photos"

We got escorted out, but he never bothered to ask about all the climbing equipment nor our lack of photography equipment. STORY CHECKS OUT.

Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.

Aw bless that security man!

Now that I finally have a legit camera I can just give the old "I'm a photographer" excuse. I've been caught before and I find being upfront and friendly works great. (Maybe with a little playing dumb thrown in.)

Otherwise, "accidentally" kick your football into the location and then if you get caught you can just say "My footy went over the fence". Nobody wants to lose a footy!

One time some pals and I were exploring an abandoned state school campus which happened to be right next to a rural neighborhood. My buddy actually brought along a dog leash and collar because someone told us that there was grounds patrol that strolled through every so often. Soon enough he pulled up in a white pickup and asked us what we were doing there and my friend pulled up the leash and said something along the lines of "our dog Skipper slipped his collar and ran through here!" The groundskeeper was yelling for "Skipper" the rest of the afternoon.
