Samurai's Impressions Of Jenkins

Hello all... had to run an errand into Lachine this afternoon and realized that Jenkins was just around the corner, more or less, from the speed shop I was at. I drove over to it and was astounded. This was the first time I had seen Jenkins 'in the flesh' as it were and I couldn't get over the destruction. This building is two steps from a wrecking ball! Another thing I noticed was that as soon as I made the corner, there was this wicked smell, this real chemical smell. Not pleasant at all. Hard to explain. I really wish I had a camera for the trip, but this was so spur of the moment... Another thing I found awesome was there is the big, beastly, crumbling edifice parked right next to a nice, modern building (the one that says MAXX on it.

Another thing was it's so wide open... there is a fence, but an open gate! Anyways, I suppose this thread is to just pass along some casual observations on what has become a UE Icon. It really is an amazing place. No one even said anything about parking inside the gate... I suppose the NY plates added to it... "What is that dumb american looking at?"

Anyways, awesome location.

glad that you liked your trip to Jenkins, few years ago it was still untouch with few graffiti and not all thrashed as it is now. they started cleaning the inside; I don't know why if it is suppose to be demolished.

I also noticed the solvent smell, it is not as strong every day. Could be from some chemical dumped overthere. The place is well knowed to be pcb contaminated mainly because of 4 big tanks in a smaller building and the soils are fuel and oil soaked. The solvent smell could be the reason to the "JVS" jenkins valve syndrome some felt after going there: slight dizzynes, headache, it was discussed in some Quebec's thread.

Have you noticed the empty shipping containers? they were not there years ago and they are empty, usually close company keeps their dangerous product into such containers.

Anyway, don't worry there is no problem going there unless you roll on the floor and drink the soil's water.

Welcome in Montreal.

I was pretty dragged out from the drive when I originally posted, but the neighborhood Jenkins is in seems kind of run-down. I didn't really go too far in as my driver's door doesn't lock. The smell was really intense, I mean even driving by on the street, it was pretty heavy.

Still, very impressive place.

the smell could be worse because of the work going there.

there was lot's of weird things over there, like emptyed on the floor electric transformators, barrels full of strange granular, crates of metal powder, the casting sand everywhere, even big piles of casting sands outside with some greenish portion. those sand dune were not there years ago.

Was the smell somewhatof sweet tasting/smelling?

It really is an amazing place.

Fuckin' right, dude. Glad to hear you got a chance to check out one of our favourite Montreal locations. Even if it is on its deathbed

As for the smell, I've noticed it becoming more noticeable recently too. I'm guessing it's the wooden blocks that used to line the entire floor of the east room and then some.

http://www.uer.ca/locations/viewgal.asp?picid=40522

They're soaked in some kind of oil, presumably to make them last longer. I imagine they were put there in the first place as a kind of vibration insulation, so they could drag valves across the floor without messing up the casting of the next one.

Ever since they started bulldozing them into piles, the smell's gotten much worse.

I'm glad I'm not working in there on a daily basis.

i saw on this old house a house in boston they went and floored useing the wooden blocks, and from the explanation they made the wooden block floor is for vibration dampening
