Titan Safety - READ THIS-

Okay boys and girls - it's time for a little talk.

Some of the pix posted of Slim Jim exploring the titans need to be discussed.

First - Don't be a frickin idiot and try to explore the Titans in shorts - it's full of rusty metal and other toxins. Wear long pants for craps sake.

Second - Once you get inside it's pretty much wide open - there aren't any real spaces or things to see by climbing around on the pipe and wire supports inside the silos. It's a long fucking fall.

I could give less than a shit about you, you're sentient, you can take risks. But when you take this kind of risk you also bring about the possibility of someone trying to rescue or recover you getting injured. Dedicated professionals who have committed themselves to the service of others shouldn't be put in a situation of risking their lives just because you want to look cool.

If you'd been on this trip with me Jim you'd still be looking for a ride home. I'd have ditched you for pulling this shit - in fact we wouldn't have gone if you'd shown up in shorts. For the first time I regret sharing location and entry information with a fellow explorer. You were reckless and your actions reflect poorly on our community.

I would strongly recommend removing the pictures of Slim climbing around on the ducts/pipes of the missile silo - some stupid kid is going to see that and think it's safe - take em off.

I don't "own" this site - but I posted it - now I regret it. I had hoped to share something cool and make it clear to all of you how dangerous it is. Slim was fucking lucky he didn't die - anyone who's seen the structures he was climbing on first hand know that.

So did the climbing pictures get removed? I don't see them.

Yes, Jim can be really annoying when it comes to unnecessary climbing, I've criticised him for it before. The amusing thing is that when he's on rope, and safe, he freaks out at the top. When repelling out of the Level Crevice lead mine, his girlfirend got her hair caught in the descender, and yet she was still able to get to the bottom quicker than him.

Leaving someone in the middle of nowhere because they don't know your rules is more jerkish.

well it depends on if they had any chance at viewing or hearing your rules before exploring but if they never would have known it wouldn't be respectable to leave them there.

That's why you lay down the rules BEFORE going...

Jim's a cool guy. No denying that.
And I've got no problem with the shorts...

But... the climbing...
If you could see it first-hand; the absolute death-defying super-bad-idea-ness of it...

I wouldn't have left him there, but he'd have heard one hell of a lecture on the way back...

The kind of lecture in which you would have PREFERRED to be left alone without a ride home...

I admit I over reacted a bit - I probably wouldn't have stranded him. He probably wouldn't have pulled it because we'd have covered it before hand.

I'm still not cool with the shorts though.

When I go out with someone I take their safety and care into consideration as much as I do my own. I take responsibility for the people I explore with and expect them to do the same. I make it really clear to all parties involved before we leave.

The pics were taken down, and I don't even know if that was necessary. I jumped the gun a bit but it really cranked me when I first saw em. Sorry for over reacting.

I'm a safety nazi at heart. I really would hate to think that someone would get hurt trying to save me. I take regular risks but nothing so risky that I endanger anyone else. Falling in a Titan silo would require a lot of people and equipment in a dangerous environment to recover/rescue someone. It just isn't worth the risk.

1. I consider myself an accomplished climber. Not certified, but accomplished, nonetheless.
And I wouldn't dream of trying to climb that shit.

2. I consider myself an accomplished swimmer. Not certified, but accomplished, nonetheless.
And I wouldn't touch the tetanus-infested waters of the silos...

It'd take a miracle (and a veritable four-alarm emergency) to get me to either climb the silo, or even touch the water...

And a lot of rope.
Charlie Bronson's always got rope.

Big C... It's not overreacting. It's just good judgement and common sense. Don't apologize for that.

I guess the point I was trying to make is that you and I would NEVER climb on that stuff and we'd NEVER swim in the water.

But I know a couple hundred emergency service workers that would do it in a heartbeat to try and save someone that got hurt doing it.

It's just not fair to them. Like I said - I could care less if Slim falls and fucks himself up - Natural selection. My primary concern is for the folks that would try to do it to rescue him or recover his corpse.

Chainsaw, I would have waited till the group was assembled outside, then i would have dragged this guy in front of everyone, and chew his up one side, and down the other in front of everyone, then inform him tyhat he will no longer accompany me anywhere if he ever showed up in shorts, and acted the same way.

I've been going to this silo for about ten years now and all I can say to Chainsaw is, Right On!!! This place is incredibly fun and INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS! And by virtue of the fact that it has become fairly well known, it also attracts a lot of dumbasses. I do know of one person who fell through the floor in the main dome and had to be rescued. I would have to agree that these professionals have much better things to do than rescue a stupid kid with zero common sense! He broke his leg and had to be carted out on a streacher. He should've hit his head, maybe it would have knocked some sense into him! Part of doing what we do and going where we go is to BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOURSELF and make sure you live for the next big adventure Go in in one piece, come out in one piece, and let know one know you were there! And don't put your fellow explorers in the position of making that phone call that none of us ever wants to make!
If it had been my trip, Jim would've been strapped to the top of the car!

Ten years, eh?
You may be the new winner.
My first trip was 7 years ago, and until now I thought I was the O.G., as it were.

I found out about the place in '95. About the only reason I go any more is to take newbies. It is spectacular if you've never seen it. I remember how amped I was after my first trip. I had a room mate who wanted to climb out on the silo wall on one of our trips also, I informed him that I would not call the rescue team if he fell, and if I had to get a rope and come down to retrieve him out of the water, the fall into the silo would be nothing compared to the ass kicking I would give him when we got out. It took him a few seconds of looking at me to understand I was not kidding! Considering the location and the way you get into it, I'm still trying to figure out how they got all those people into the silo for the Rave a few years back without drawing attention and or getting caught! Has anyone else noticed all the cool colors that have grown on the pizza in the carpeted room? Science at it's best!

This one goes to eleven..........
