Nye County Ruins
< on 2/23/2020 7:16 AM >

On a recent trip through Death Valley, @Goste and I spotted some structures just off of the highway. We had to stop and check it out, and after doing some research it turns out this place has some cool, albeit unfortunate history. I will keep my write up vague as specific details would make this place too easy to find.

This cement plant was built in the early 40s by and was intended to serve as a processing center for a nearby quarry, capable of turning out 80 tons of cement daily. Marble would be crushed at the quarry before passing through a 150'x10' rotary kiln, and then to another rotary cooling cylinder. From there, it would be passed on to a grinding mill to complete the product. A single 1100 horsepower diesel motor was to power the entire process.

With only one month left until completion, a fire broke out, completely destroying the blacksmith shop, machine shop, storage house, and main office. This fire caused an estimated $30,000 in damages, equivalent to $552,795 today. Despite such a hard blow, the plant fought to rebuild, but unfortunately had a difficult time sourcing parts for their equipment. Eventually the entire project was scrapped, however the company continued mining operations in the area, going so far as to purchase an additional 360 acres to secure water rights.

80 years have passed and these ruins remain, sentenced to a life of baking in the harsh sun. A concrete monument to the cement that never was.

Just making my contribution for the spot. The irony of the concrete is all that remains is great!

The mountains out here are unbelievable! It truly is amazing whether you're driving through or just get to do some hiking, there's something that always gets me with the southwestern desserts.

It was definitely cool to see the contrast between this concrete plant and the local concrete plant we have in Northern CA. I'm sure there's many more to be explored so I've got my eyes peeled.

Some lovely photos! Got a film like feel to them, wouldn't be surprised if they were shot with film.

Looks like a beautiful hot day in California.

I dig a lot of the graffiti/art, some artsy and skilled pieces.

Pic 4 is a trippy one I wonder if the painter was a woman or man... Interesting hand and facial features.

6 is a dope one. Calm energy to it. Beautiful mountains in the distance.

14 one of my 7 favorites.

21 Sick piece of graffiti! Wish there was more graffiti at this level in Oregon.

22 Angle is minimalistic but like informative. Warm lighting and neat textures/materials. I dig it.

17 has a like stone age architecture/pyramids era ancient feel to it.

Maybe one day I'll drop dough on a film camera and shoot my first roll of film. Just scared and extremely afraid to try new things.

Hit me up if you ever go north to Portland .

PS I like 16 too!

Thank you for the enthusiasm! All of these were shot on 35mm film. If you're on the fence about trying out film I would go for it! It can be hard to get good shots if you don't have the right lighting but the cameras and lenses are not that expensive if you're willing to do a little hunting on ebay, just be prepared for the cost of film and development/scanning. Each roll of film costs me anywhere from $4 to $16 depending on what I'm shooting and my local camera shop will develope and scan starting at $10 a roll. For reference there is 36 shots in most 35mm rolls of film.

Everything I shoot is on film but I'm actually looking for a cheap micro4/3 dslr camera with a kit lens to spread the cost and for shooting at night.

Feel free to dm me if you have any film questions, I'm sure a lot of people on here have more experience with film than I do but I'm hsppy to share what I know! I've actually been wondering about a couple locations up north. I've done a little hiking near Mt. Hood and I really enjoy the landscape of the PNW and Portland has a pretty cool vibe itself!

Thank you! I shoot with an Olympus OM1. This was all shot on Fujifilm c200 but I switch up which film I'm shooting all the time. I really like shooting with Ilford hp5 for b&w and I really like Kodak Ektar 100 and Fuji superia 400. I also really like to shoot with any speed of Kodak Portra and I like using Cinestill 800t if the lighting is right. I think with film the isn't as important as the lenses available for the camera.

Glad you liked the shots! I had a lot of fun exploring this place!
