Off the Radar
< on 1/25/2020 6:55 AM >

This airfield was built in the early 1940's to train navy pilot's during WW2. After the war it was used as a caretaker airfield and then briefly used for Nasa training until finally closing in the year 2000.

My Experience,
I decided to pre-dawn with WindsorSB to explore the airfield. Our prior attempts were stopped by police activity on the runways due to sideshows. Most of the remaining buildings on the grounds have been demolished which is sad to see, but the historic control tower remains in disrepair. The tower itself is pretty untouched by graffiti except for the hallway, but the birds nesting in the ceiling made the atmosphere hard to breath in, even with masks. The controls in the upper tower are all gone except for the runway light panel which was pretty cool to see. We also got to drive the (2) 7,000 foot runways to take some car shots. We took my 1975 Plymouth as a ploy in case any police showed up to use that as a excuse to what we were doing there. Again as we were leaving ran into highway patrol on the exit road, but for whatever reason they didn't seem to ask what we were up to.

14. Notice what looks like blood above the door.

15. After doing research, this item left in the control tower was a wireless battery operated camera left to keep watch after it was abandoned. If this was hanging on a wall functionally like it should have been I probably wouldn't have thought anything of it.

Man, I love how the red of the Plymouth pops against the overcast sky. Really cool shots.

Awesome post!

This was definitely a fun one although I had a really hard time shooting film inside with barely any light.

I'll probably post additional shots when I get my black and white rolls back from the lab.

Great first pic post, Goste; welcome to UER! I must agree with Void Diver, your Plymouth is a sweet ride, and really does make the shots pop. I recently found a very abandoned old airfield/radar base...neat explore, even though 40 years of neglect does indeed take its toll. Glad you were able to infiltrate, got some pics, and got out safely. 😊
Windsor, also great pics; thanks for sharing...I definitely look forward to seeing those B&W's. Awesome job y'all, look forward to more!

Great post and pics! Really dig the shot of the Plymouth on the runway.
The outside seems to have been cleaned up significantly - wonder if that was done by the sideshows you mentioned, since they seem to use the site a lot.

Great set! Would’ve been awesome if the ATC tower’s top windows weren’t boarded.

Or smashed out.
Without that element protection it would be completely trashed and vermin infested.
Not too much more disgusting than walking through a couple inches of pigeon shit on the steps.

If the glass was still there it would have been a heck of a photo, with the amount of shotgun cases below the tower looked like someone stupid was having fun shooting out the glass. It's too bad...

Thanks Thinklikefreak! This was actually my first post with UER so I was trying to find a spot that would stand out! It took a decent amount of research and scouting, but I think it paid off pretty well.

Awesome photos! I love seeing the same places on two different cameras.

WindsorSB, I love how the fog showed up on film.

There used to be a whole bar out there, and tons of leftover NASA stuff. The sheriff and CHP seemed to be using it for a high speed driving course. And rings of tires for I'm not sure what.

Love the shots. It's too bad the windows at the top of the tower are boarded up.
