Oweeee! Oh jeese. I just got my sh!t ruined by that utility tunnel I posted some pics of earlier.

It just kept going and making turns to the left and right with 10-18 metre coridoors. Anyways, I'm about 40 minutes into it and my lungs start to burn, my face turns red, I begin itching all over my lower back at the pants line and my hands and everything are burning red. They start to get all red and swollen. My eyes started to swell up like I had been in a fight. So we got out through the hole in the roof of the tunnel, left and were caught by the janitor. He said I had been exposed to heavy heavy ammounts of asbestos and well as plenty of a spray formed fiber glass insulation powder/stringy stuff. He was pretty cool with the whole thing after I showed him the pictures on my digi-cam and explained I wasn't there to steal anything. He said I had little dust particle sized splinters of glass in body, eyes, and lungs, and suggested I went home and soaked in a hot bath for an hour. It did jacksquat.....

I can barely see haha..

No kidding. JP exposed himself to particles that can cause LONG TERM damage. Why do you think they have these places sealed off? Going in them requires a LOT of careful consideration and prepping, nothing to be taken lightly. Don't go in there with just pants and a t-shirt, go prepared!

Asbestos alone won't cause the symptoms that you endured, but breathing in insulation that is riddled with fiberglass and all that other nasty stuff will hurt you in the short term but does not, IIRC, pose long term damage.

See --

To be on the safe side, go check with a doctor. More than likely, its passed through you, and any that may have stuck to your skin is probably long gone after a hot soaking and washing.

Ok thanks. Well I've learned my lesson. I'm not going to make the same mistake twice. My mom called her friend who is a doctor and he said that the ammount of exposure I had was only enough for short term discomfort. And you do need prolonged exposure to asbestos for there to be respiratory complications.

Not that I plan on going into anymore asbestos/fiberglass insulated utility tunnels soon, but if I were to what would some of you suggest for breathing apparatus/face mask. What brand of face mask? Like the doctors wear or what???

Here's what we were wearing...I'm the one in the fleece.

If you mean the paper masks doctor's wear no that will not help with asbestos. It will help with most airborne dust though. If you want a good quality asbestos mask go to a safety supply store.

I bought mine which is rated for asbestos (on the right) for around $35 at Home Depot. It's not bad for a medium-quality respirator. The full face one on the left is a first responder respirator for Ammonia gas:

Here's a tip. When exposed to all that nasty stuff a hot bath is the worst thing you can do. Take a cold shower. Hot water opens your pores allowing those micro irritants the ability to get in deeper and F#@K with you further. Cold water closes the pores and the stuff just slides off. I worked in a fibre glass plant for a bit so I know this first hand. T.L.

Fibreglass does no real damage, long or short term, except for irritation.

Asbestos is EXTREMELY dangerous - it can cause asbestosis, an almost always fatal form of cancer, sometimes decades after exposure. There's no real problem with asbestos if it doesn't get into the air - i.e. in asbestos wrap around pipes, or in the sheets they used to use in buildings - but if those things are broken, and dust gets into the air, the asbestos is then inhaled, and it embeds itself into the lung walls. Don't screw around with asbestos. A paper mask doesn't cut it, nor does a rebreather or filter apparatus. Hasn't anyone seen what they do when they remove asbestos from a building? They seal it off completely, and every worker that goes in wears a fully sealed, head-to-toe body suit, and is cleaned thoroughly when he/she comes out. If you're going into places where asbestos might be found.......DON'T! JP - go see your doctor ASAP, and discuss this with him/her.

Long-term exposure to asbestos fibers will do damage, but if exposed to it for a brief amount of time, it passes through your circulatory system. Being exposed to it, for example, at work will increase the risk of lung cancer, asbestosis, mesothelioma and other disorders, but you need exposures that run in the range of 800+ fibers per year measured in milliliters. This really only occurs if you work in a setting where asbestos fibers are blown around and inhaled over a period of 10+ years.

Of course, people go apeshit even mentioning asbestos. It is not dangerous in itself, and is a very safe product, as long as proper precautions are taken to ensure that it does not deteriorate. Condemning buildings and/or taking very expensive procedures to rid safe buildings of this, when it poses no risk by itself, is stupid. A waste of taxpayers dollars if you ask me.

Ripping up tiles in old buildings because they contain 3% asbestos? You gotta be kidding me, but it happens. Tiles with a slight tint of asbestos is NOT a health hazard, as it is not friable. Yeah, take a hammer, crush a tile up, breathe the entire thing in, or snort it (whichever is your fancy), and yes, you might have a problem...

I did a research paper on this very situation about one year ago; if I find the report, which may be gone after my latest mishap with my PC, then I'll post it, as it contains factual information that isn't crap overblown by the popular media and money-crazed lawyers. I received an 95% on the paper and comments included that it was "well researched" and "very conclusive."

No need to see a doctor JP about asbestos inhalation. Even if you did inhale a SIGNIFICANT portion of asbestos, as in you took a pipe, crushed it until it was friable (think of dust), and gulped it down, you are just fine. Not as if he can do anything about it even if you did consume vast amounts of it anyways...

I disagree with your casual attitude towards asbestos. Asbestos is conclusively linked to severe health problems - and while risks increase with long term exposure, studies have not established a "safe" exposure level - which is why there are such strong regulations in place around handling and disposal procedures.

It is not dangerous in itself Then why is it banned for most uses in most countries?

Condemning buildings and/or taking very expensive procedures to rid safe buildings of this, when it poses no risk by itself, is stupid. It DOES pose a risk - any time it is disturbed or damaged, or when there is a fire in the building. It's not dangerous if it's undisturbed/encapsulated, but who can predict when/if it will be disturbed? Same logic as for PCBs - little risk while they site in their tranformer tanks on power poles, but if they catch fire....watch out.

And the research I've done wasn't sourced from "the popular media or money-crazed lawyers" - I used government, industry and health sources. Not a single one made any claims similar to those you've posted here. Not one said "short term exposure is safe," or things to that effect. Not one said "it's alright to breath a bunch of it in, as long as it's only once or twice." In fact, every one cited the dangers (granted, mostly to do with long term exposure) of exposure, and all stated that the evidence wasn't conclusive, either way. All stated that any inhalation of asbestos should be avoided. How much clearer can it be? How is it that you have come to such strong conclusions on this, when the best experts strongly state that they are not sure? Do you know something they don't?

You want to be nonchalant, fly at 'er. Until the medical establishment is a bit clearer on the facts, I'd rather be a bit more cautious, thanks.....

As far as JP goes, if it were me, I'd talk to a doctor - and it might be a good idea to try to get a sample of the material, and submit it for testing, to see if it does, in fact contain asbestos. If it's there in high concentration, it should be dealt with properly, so that others aren't exposed to it.....

Yea well the good news is I'm feeling fine now. I just ended up having a soar throat for a couple days because like fibreglass at the back of my throat. But on another note-> Alright I have nobody to go exploring with, as in well I do have friends and best friends but none that I figure I can trust with entrance locations. Anyone else run into this?

It would be cool to have some strictly business companions for UE'ing in Victoria

Seriously, I finally stopped laughing long enough to form my question. Mavrix aren't you the guy who almost found a tunnel once in Toronto when Toronto is riddled with them? I mean come on, how can you promise someone massive adventures when you can't find tunnels? I do most of my draining alone here in Toronto and I started out by listening too and studying the efforts of someone like Kowalski when he talks about drains and tunnels. If you did the same you might sound a lot more informed about things thousands of km's away from you. I'm not trying to flame you or anything I honestly enjoy your posts, but not for reasons you'd probably like. I nominated you for a special mention in the thread of the year vote, your never say die attitude in the face of all reason is inspiring. Add the fact that your willing to drive across the country to prove this is well mind-boggling.

Weird **** happens around me, lets just say, i used psychic powers to get the location of a burried gold, and then i found the spot in a forest, the only spot ther, started diggin and found pieces of an old chest, then i found stone ruins etc.

If you believe you can do it, then you can do it, thats how the quote goes?

I hope this post humors you further, I dont mind because it always happens online, people hardly every agree with me because my beliefs are so bizarre... to the uninitiated.. muhaha
