EDMONTON tunnels

I have heard rumors of long tunnles under the university, anybody know more?

Any cool places to see in Edmonton, or UofA students wanting to go exploring?

I know they exist; I have a map, I've talked to somebody who's seen them, but I don't know how to get into them. Anything they drive motorbikes around are long tunnels.

Sounds familiar.

I'm poking around down here in Victoria. There's a long historical urban legend...rather, an urban legend rooted in history or even historical memory...about tunnels in Victoria.

I know they exist. I have a map. I've talking to about three dozen people who've either seen them or been inside them, but I don't know how to get into them.

Keep looking. If they're there, you'll find them.

And don't listen to Jester. He's playful and spunky, and he likes to antagonize you (I luv him for it), so don't take his incredulity personally. I don't.

Well, I heard the tunnels in Victoria actually lead directly to Edmonton, so maybe Kubla can help out...

Well, you could always try getting in touch with one of the best explorers (in my opinion the best) in Edmonton, Reduxzero. His site is www.drainsofmycity.com

Be careful in there; the things are filled to the tits with motion detectors, and security responds quickly 24 hours. Probably the only way in is with a campus security escort. Or...New Year's or another statutory holiday when they're off. A few years ago Dan Lazin from the Gateway went on a full tour.

NOW WE'RE GETTING SOMEWHERE.

That's exactly what I've heard. There's a little hole in Mount Doug (Victoria) and if you can squeeze through it and follow the passage to the end, you'll come out in a Dairy Queen just off Jasper Avenue (Edmonton).

I knew we'd work this out, Jester. You're the best.

Kiss kiss.

being a grad of U of A I can say two things about tunnels in Edmonton. There are some long industrial maintenance tunnels starting in the chemistry dept which go south towards the hospital. Nothing to interesting and the average sound level is 90 db. so its not that enjoyable. However, much more enjoyable then this is a set of train tracks just off 9th street bridge which go into a tunnel underground which would be under all the highrises overlooking the river valley to the north . ive been in this tunnel for some rites of passage and there is a very interesting alcove half way down it where you can have a small party. I believe they have erected a gate/fence at the tunnel entrance but definitly worth the exploration. On the other hand i've heard many people who have been in both and who have managed to clamber their way to the tunnels in China town in Vancouver. On one set of batteries for their LED headlamp no less!!! i think its around 1200 k end to end .. quite an acheivment as far as tunnels go. And the best part of that tunnel i must say is that it gets you out of Edmonton and into Vancouver. But once again.. I've only met people who have been in it but no one who can actually tell me where the entrance is.

If anyone finds a tripod foot that happens to fit my tripod in the UofA tunnels, let me know.

I am missing one foot and now the whole thing does not stand right. Hate to have to buy a new tripod for a ten cent piece of rubber.

If you ever come to Calgary then email [email protected] and you'll be made welcome, taken to locations and given free accommodation. We'll help save you the $$$ you spend on the flight over here :)

HEY...I found something like what you describe near the hole in Mount Doug in Victoria.

I used to live in one of those high rises above the tunnel. Once I went through it on the streetcar. I always meant to go through it in the winter, but it's always locked off.

Indeed I recall a train going over the tracks around white ave during the fringe and or some other summer festival it was a 1 or 2 week event. and then that was the end of it for the year. I can say that the train isnt stored in the tunnel,

The streetcars run for several months in the summer and spring. The tunnel would be open when it's in operation, but expect them to see you if you aren't fast.

It's not as hard as you make it seem. The full length of the track is fairly short, and I'm sure they only have one actual train running on it at any given time. When I went through the tunnel, I just waited at the south entrance, waited for the train to go by, and walked right though. I was walking swiftly but not running, and I made it all the way through before the train caught up with me. Easy as pie.

There's deadman alcoves in there as well for you to hide from the oncoming train. Its a pretty easy site, I just stumbled onto it randomly one day waiting to meet up with ReduxZero a couple of years ago.

Well, yeah, I'd assume it would be easy to time it once the thing goes through. I was interested in the streetcar when I moved to that neighbourhood, so I took a ride on it and got some pamphlets. It's a volunteer-run thing (though they wouldn't let me drive the streetcar).

It wasn't easy to see anything in the tunnel from the train, so I'd assume an alcove would be a good enough hiding space.

they released a map of the u of a tunnels in the edmonton journal. it stretches the hole u of a. they do ride bikes donw there and the decimal leval is not loud unless your in a building mantence room. there are sensors and its neat but not as neat as an abandoned base or mine.

I can confirm through first hand experience, there are motion sensors in the the UofA Tunnels and they drive little scooter things with trailers throught the tunnels.

I ran into the motorbikes one day whilst on the way to a class in V-Wing.

In the passage between BioSci and V-Wing/Physics, two doors on each side were open, and the men on motorbikes sat in the middle of the damn passage.

A heads-up: V-Wing is slated for demo to make room for the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science. That could make for some nice exploration.
