I really hate to go on an off-topic tangent. But what does her grandfather being a mason have to do with anything? Masons aren't anywhere near as interesting as they're made out to be. Some of their buildings do have some pretty funky "secret" passages in them. The one in North Vancouver on Lonsdale is a great example of that. I have heard something about some tunnels on the island around an old Colonial-era prison for transporting prisoners and such. I, for the life of me, can't remember any details about it, something I caught on the idiot box one night. So I have no clue how much help that can be, but, I'm pretty sure that it was somewhere in Victoria. Cheers! -PoT

| 'This place is the work of the gods' was my first thougt. I explored the uninhabited spaces, and I corrected myself 'the gods that built this place have died.' Then I reflected on its pecularities, and told myself: 'the gods that built this place were mad.' from 'The Immortal' by J.L. Borges |

The masons did a lot of the stonework in Victoria and the lower mainland, that is all.
| ...and given that Victoria was a gateway to the Gold Rush, and that many of the original stone buildings were constructed by men who were miners and stone cutters, is it AT ALL POSSIBLE that they, along with the Masons and newly arrived Chinese workers, constructed tunnels under or around their buildings? The thing of it is that stories such as these don't spring from the earth without some foundation. Rumours beget rumours, but even these have some kernel of truth.

| | | Posted by geoplus This whole secret tunnel is very interesting considering the satanist population in the area. Although I wouldn't recommend anyone poking around alone around there. If anything is being organized for this let me know I am very interested, also if anyone here uses IRC there is a channel set up for UE on DALNet at #urbex.
| I think that, contrary to popular belief, Satanists are not really into human sacrifice, murder, blood worship, casting deadly spells, etc. etc. etc. My understanding is that Satanism is a purely animist religion, where magic is practiced for the benefit of self-gratification (not a bad thing, necessarily) and that participants or those who practice the religion devote their energies to the glories of being human...something like that. Meaning that I have little fear of being turned into a steaming pile of shit, lest a Satanist discover me in one of their ritual chambers. Or being boiled alive, for that matter. I could be wrong. If there are Satanists out there want to challenge or correct my interpretation of their religion, please enlighten me.

Looks like a made-up script to me, but I am not a linguist. Where is it from, where did you find it? Give a bit more info, might be something to be gleaned from it.
| I asked around, and it's Pitman's shorthand, something stenographers used long ago before digital voice recorders and voice recognition software made it possible to speak into a machine that then turned your speech into text. Unfortunately, few of my gang were able to translate it. I found it scratched onto clay, so I copied it as faithfully as I could and brought it to a few people who know things about hieroglyphics, etc.

| | | Apparently, there are catacombs under the Old Courthouse in Bastion Square. Before the courthouse was built, the site was home to the police barracks, and in a small courtyard out behind the building, the condemned were hanged. Their bodies were buried in catacombs. Also (apparently), there is a tunnel that leads from the catacombs straight down to the water's edge. The entrance to this tunnel is blocked over now, but you can see it from the big parking lot across the street from the bottom end of Bastion Square. And five people have told me this week alone that the esoteric pentagram symbol, in conjunction with some other obscure symbol, provide a mapping system for every tunnel entrance in the city. The problem is in properly scaling the symbols to match the scale of the original city grid. Once proper scale has been calculated, the intersecting lines of the combined symbols reveal tunnel entrances throughout the city.
