found a website about tunnels under chicago

http://www.trincol...nline/chicago.html

Awesome post, seriously, thanks for that. Chicago is incredible. Likely a very little known aspect of the Windy City, until recently.

Wish I could boast of discovering the portal to the underworld here, but these photos are just another recent look at those under sidewalk spaces.

Imho, they ARE interesting, provide very cool purple light, and are an odd window to the world above. As well, they are a likely place for potential tunnels between buildings, and other out of site things of interest.

I really tried to get all I could from the 'Engineer' who maintains the boiler that serves the Yadda building, and the other across the street. His reply to the obvious question was: No, there is no tunnel to the other building we heat, just the steam pipes. And no other tunnels he knows of, in five years as Chief Engineer. (He didn't seem the type who would spend time looking, or being curious)

I wandered all through their boiler room area, looking for 'him', but did not see any sealed over passages or stuff like that.

He said the huge prism embedded sidewalk area, (on the front of the building under the sidewalk) was filled in years ago. These quick shots, (before he returned) were of the back of the building. The more we look, the closer we are...

The bukakke cab drivers could make up any retarded shit they want. The tunnels don't even have to exist at all for them to tell their stories.

This is funny.

I had a ride from a cabbie the other day ,he says that the tunnels do indeed exist under the garden city ,,
I think most cabbies tell you whatever you want to hear ,,,"for a bigger tip"
they can't possibly be a very reliable source of information as most of them have never set foot from their cabs ,,
The homeless ,on the other hand are very reliable as they are walking throughout the capitol,, looking for shelter from the elements ,,
I hear the gaurden angels were in town assessing wether or not they needed to set up a chapter ,,to "curb street crime" ,
well they have decided not to ,because victoria is safe ,,

as for the tunnels I wonder if the gaurden angels know about the dangers of the discovery of the tunnels ,,and what mass touerisim will do to the secrets that the tunnels hold ,,
thanks ,,

Greetings and Salutations,
I must say that I am impressed by the progress of many the members of this thread, especially tanuki and k-khan.
Like me you refuse to rest until the truth that has been buried by unwavering denial from city spokepersons for years is brought to light. Dont blame them for hiding info though , ever see what our city's logo used to be?
a google image search could be very 'illuminating"...
OK before you dismiss me as another one of those numerous numbskulls who frequent this thread and make it almost unbearable to sift through for facts with their mute points,
I HAVE SEVERAL LEADS AND AM WILLING TO TRADE INFORMATION
but before that I need a few matters clarified:

Who is Frank Hertel and what is the story behind the IEC building across the street from the old Hudson Bay building, and the subsequent purchase of the Victoria MAchinery Depot by Hertel even after he was accused of some money scandal? What was the nature of the research conducted at IEC ? Could he have been a German engineer pardoned fromt he Nuremburg Trials as part of operation paperclip ?

Whats the deal with the Old Cemeteries Society? Its hard to imagine that this group is so large and has its own newsletter (which can be viewed on their website).
Why is there a private organization doing restoration and preservation work that is actually the city's responsability? Why does library have copies of Michelle remembers listed in thier directory but not actually on thier shelves...? Dont even get me started about the locked Local History section that requires appointement and escort to view.

Many of the exisiting tunnels may have had strategic uses during the second world war. What are the effects of NORAD on the current activity in the underground. Does having shared "national security" capabilities with the USA give them control of these important supply lines?

And lastly, has anyone considered or have sufficient resources to, do an aerial geodesic survey of Victoria. If you looked for major irregularities of density in the bedrock caused by, say, manmade gaps dug through it, maybe you could peice together where the passages you have not explored yet are.

It would be immensly helpfull to have these questions answered, and in return I will assist other when I can.
I dont want to spill all the beans in my first post so for now I will bid you all adue

I can only help with one of your problems. Michelle Remembers is not on the shelf because the copies are checked out. You can place a hold on the gvpl website and eventually it will be there with your name on it. Hey, you could also ask around regarding patented "Michelle Remembers" city tours.

True enough: the GVPL has multiple copies of the book (allegedly) but every one of them is (or was when I was scrounging around for one) in various stages of HOLD and/or tranfer. I believe there's one in special collections, but to tell you the truth, it's been a couple of years since I poked through the library's catalogue looking for Michelle Remembers.

I placed a hold in late fall one year and waited and waited and waited.

As it turns out, I bought a near-mint condition copy in Sydney about twenty minutes before GVPL notified me with news that my 7 month old wait was finally over.

Welcome aboard Scooter Lot's of NRG in your post. Frank Hertel? Do you think he's 'linked', to the giant sausage company? The content of trans fats in those pups it definitely a crime. And the name 'Frank', is like totally German for sausage, a likely code/subliminal clue.

Years ago, that eight? story building opposite the Saa... PD had the letters IEC on it, then it changed to WANG. Perhaps Asian interests took over. I seem to recall some kind of financial issues with IEC. That's all I don't know about Hertel.

Your geodesic idea is intriguing. Perhaps this information already exists? The general geology of Victoria shouldn't be hard to find out. (University library?) Specific blocks?, that will likely raise the wrong kind of interest at City Hall, and that guardian troll at the archives. As you suggest, the locations of 'gaps' eg: the Johnson Street ravine, and others could be very revealing.

The Old Cemeteries Society may have an eerie jingle to it, but really it is just a cemetery heritage group which provides walking tours and such, run by heritage and restoration enthusiasts. Although I suppose you can't rule anything out ;)

Although it is easy to visualize the extended basement tunnels and walkable brick drains being used to (or planned on being used to) transport important people and or army personnel and supplies...this is highly unlikely. They are just various conduits weather for drainage or other purposes that are simply not practical for strategic military use. Although disproving the existence of other tunnels used specifically for this sort of use cannot be done.

"For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don't believe, no proof is possible.”
-Stuart Chase(Writer/Economist)

If we do want to go as far as considering that the government does have military transport or strategical tunnels under the city. Things of such secrecy would definitely be either kept out of any publically available maps OR be undetectable by them. You can't really decide where to explore based on bedrock density maps. I can truly say that I believe that under the majority of Victoria lies absolutely nothing but dirt and bedrock, as well as the occasional burial or slaughter grounds where the remains of Vancouver Island's original inhabitants. These here are ballpark numbers but here we go...I'd say that 95% of Victoria's drains and water related conduits are 6 inches to a couple feet wide. 3% of the remaining conduits are back-breakers, and the remaining 2% are walkable/standable drainage tunnels. Now, that of course is all in respect to drains. Most all rumoured opium/slave/brother transport tunnels have been debunked as either one of these drains. Or a simple utility tunnel or storage space. We have already come to the conclusion that it is absolutely possible to tunnel through solid bedrock deep beneath this city. It is just common sense that this is possible, but know we know it has been done in Victoria and kept relatively underwraps.

I agree with J peterman in regards to most of these passages being embellished to "tunnel" status when usually they are just walkable storm drains.
But that does not discount thier stagegic usefullness when the Bay Street Armoury, Vic High with its loverly rooftop sniper nests, Landsdowne the former airbase and the freakin Governor Genneral's mansion are all connected to this underground grid.
Our city is just now considering getting a sewage treatment plant and the reason it has taken so long is that the sewer system we have was not really designed for dealing with human effluent. Any real and functional components of the sewers one could certainly not walk through cause those pipes would be filled the matter being transported out to the sea.

I live in what used to be Spring Ridge, water resevoir for Victoria, and all those antiqauted irrigation ducts are still there, but are now dry. Also on the Second floor of the central library is poster called "The Lost Streams of Victoria" which shows that under the location of Vic High there used to be harris lake, with a stream flowing to where the bat street armoury is located now. Also many lost streams forming a delta of sorts where Ross Bay is at.

Just out of curiosity, Is the section of drain that connects to the governor's grounds even a backbreaker? I was under the impression it was accessible only to rodents, and barely

dude you can look through the old school storm drains all the way down st charles from the side of the stadacona tennis courts, guestimating from this view and how far echoes reverberate, perhaps 4 1/2 feet or more...
but good luck finding access!
