We considered camping in an open air room and obviously not in heavy, stagnant, moldy conditions. Like I said, our concern was with shelter from the wind which an open air building or room would provide, as would the cannon mounts, based on what I'm told. The thought at the time was that we'd be going over the next couple weeks, meaning we'd need as much protection from the elements as possible because it really isn't warm enough yet. The smart thing to do would be to wait for summer but that may not be an option for my group since I think we might be parting ways sooner than later.

The campsite was described to me as being out of the way. If it actually isn't that far out of the way and it's protected from the wind, etc., we'll most likely stay there.

Is anyone up on what happened to the kid who died out there? One of my friends went out there not long after his death. On the ride out, Red Beard mentioned something about a creepy dude, a pedophile type guy, who lurks out there. He was lurking the night that the kid died out there. Apparently, this creeper sleeps in the hull of a wrecked boat? Is there any truth to any of this?

Its not to hard to get to the Island so it could be anyone there. Definitely go with a group.

When we went we spent on the Island four days with camping. I was the only one still going by this time [lol] my friends where pretty much dead by this time.

It may be a small island but there is a lot to see.

Four days is way to much for us. We'll all have jobs or work to get back to. I know I won't be able to prevent a little bit of alcohol from getting to the island with us, so we'll be ready to return after a day or two at the most.

The island is deceiving. It looks small from Halifax, but the amount of stuff to see must be immense. I'd love to go for 2-3 days because I know I could rough it and survive, but the others, I'm not so sure.

It's a huge island, if you want to see it all. Everything's spread out, so there's a lot of walking.

The main road that runs north-south is Garrison Road, it runs along the western shore. Fort Ives on the north end is right off of the road, Fort McNab is a 2 minute walk off of the main road down another road, if that. The tea house, which is the designated camping site, is a five minute walk off of Garrison Road. The only hard part about that, is it's up hill, but that's fine. It's situated almost half way between Fort Ives and Fort McNab, so you're pretty much right in the middle of everything you would want to see on the island. Spend one day exploring everything to the north, including Fort McNab & Hugonin Battery, as well as some other neat ruins of buildings or houses, and the two neat old houses in the middle of the fields. If you're into hiking, there's a lot of trails around the island too. Spend the other day exploring everything to the south (there's more interesting stuff south), Fort McNab, Strawberry Battery, the rifle range, the search light emplacement, etc.
Jeez, I gotta get back to the island sometime.

Same here. There is some stuff of that first page that I was previously unaware of on the South Shore where I'm originally from. I'm moving back there, plan to find it all this summer.

I've been looking for Connaught Battery for quite some time now. Where abouts is it? I know it's somewhere on Ferguson's Cove Rd., i just don't know where though.

It is right next to York Shore Battery.

York Shore Battery is in the background.

Actually, I think Connaught Battery is farther north than that, closer to the northern end of Ferguson's Cove Road.
I think this is it here:

I don't know... This is how Connaught is described on the NS Forts website.

A WWI battery with three 4.7-inch quick-firing guns. Located at Fergusons Cove, north of York Redoubt.

And the area I believe to be Connaught, the one I posted above you, appears to have once housed three smaller guns and is north of York Redoubt. It makes sense to me.

I'm not sure what your link is showing. I see the location that you think is Connaught and you may be right about it.. Someone will have to drive out there and check it out!

I was down Fergusons Cove Road once vising somebody, and I remember seeing the entrance to this mystery battery, and as I recall it was fenced off. I don't remember if there were any signs, however, identifying what it is.

Ok, I was down there this past weekend, and when I finished up at YR, I took a drive down the road, and parked my car in that little service area, then walked up the service road. The whole area isn't fenced off, it's just that one modern looking building. Past that were some 64-pounder emplacements, but like you said Chris, there were no signs indicating what it is. My guess is that it is Connaught.

BTW tribeach: Those three "gun housings" were for watch lights. I recall reading the description board at York Shore Battery, and it said they were there to watch for U-boats coming into the harbour.

There's similar search lights on McNab's as well.
There used to be a submarine net between McNabs and York Redoubt, so they were probably also used to monitor the net.

nootz, what part of Lake Echo are you from?

I live down on Ponderosa Dr., just past Clark's Convenience (PJ's for those who lived there in the 90's)

Small world.
PJ's really went downhill when they sold it and it became Clark's.

Yeah, it really did...but I think the only good place to explore up in LE is down behind Camp Victoria on River Dr. There was a S&R tower there at one point, it was probably knocked away by Juan though, I haven't been up there in years. Then there's also the island, there used to be a cottage there, the foundation is still there, and the two wells, other than that, nothing in LE to see

Yeah, I used to go camping up at the far end of the lake back there. I think I might take a gander up on the mountain this summer, see if there's anything left of that tower
